Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Do You Use Double Opt-In in Your E-marketing?

I know that a lot of us offer free newsletters, ezines, tips, what have you. In the software we use, we have the choice to use double opt-in or not. For those of you who don't know what that is, when someone signs up for our free etips, they get an email that asks them to reply to confirm the subscription.

We have also heard other "emarketers" say they do not use double opt-in because they lose subscribers that way. I know that we do have some that either choose not to opt-in after signing up or they must ignore that email for one reason or another.

But we feel it is good business to use the double opt-in, and a best practice for the internet.

Do you use it or not? Why or why not? Would love to hear.

I don't send out [yet] any monthly newsletters to my clients. If I was going to send out newsletters, I'd make sure that my Terms Of Conditions included that right. I will of course allow opt-outs.

Is this a good business practice? Fair? What do you think Bob? =]

Actually, you, as the sender, choose either a single opt-in or a double opt-in. And of course they always have the option of unsubscribing or opting-out.

Another reason we use the double opt-in is the service we use sends our our emails in a two tiered system. When you use the double opt-in you have a better guarantee that it will get where it is suppose to go, rather than the single opt-in.

Even though both are not considered spam, since they did opt-in to your list, I just think the double opt-in is a better practice and looked upon more favorably in the "email world".

Now who knows, that may not have even come close to answering your question ; )

I avoid double opt in as much as possible. The confirmation message gets blocked by some ISPs and it seriously drags down your subscription rate.

The newsletter services will try to scare you wtih horror stories about "all the bad things that can happen" but that's just to protect themselves from their mail servers getting flagged as sending spam. Yeah, you can get some false susbcribes but they're pretty obvious and I just delete them off my list before I send a newsletter.

Thanks Elge. I had the feeling that the single opt-in would be better. This is what 1Shopping Cart says. Do you think we would still be safe to go to the single opt-in?

    Thanks so much!!

All mail sent to clients who have gone through the Closed Loop process, or who did not require it (i.e. customers and affiliates) will receive email from our Tier 1 mail server, while everyone else will receive email from our Tier 2 server. Our Tier 1 mail server provides a safer more secure system to send your mail from and rewards merchants who have followed email best-practices; providing the best possible delivery chances. Our Tier 2 mail server is the same quality mail system we have always used and we take the most precautions possible to ensure email deliverability.

If there are any clients in your database who are currently receiving mail from our Tier 2 mail server, you can manually send them an Opt-in Message in order to move them to our Tier 1 mail server. Once they opt-in you won't have to do anything else as they will automatically be eligible to receive mail from our Tier 1 server.

Yeah. I remember when that happened...

A few years ago, 1SCart was kind of looking the other way and some users were sending spam and 1SCart got blacklisted by Comcast, AOL and a few others. That's when they started the tier 1 and 2 thing. In part to accommodate single opt in and in part because they couldn't get their reputation back on their first server (now called the tier 2 server).

That's when I quite using them. They were less than forthright about why delivery rates went through the floor. But if you're selling info products, need an afiiliate program and are trying to cross market, you pretty much have to use them.

This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
