Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Ever have anyone try to sell you what you do?

I get several telemarketing calls a week: Office Supplies, Business Coaching, Advertising, Yellow Book, Siding, Windows, Yada and more Yada.

Today I actually got a call from someone trying to sell me promotional products. I love it! She asked me who we by our pens that have "Andrew's Promotional Products" written on them. Duh, what we do is in our name and she still tried to sell them to us.

I have had to do some tele-sales in the past and I am no stranger to cold prospecting, so I was gentle to her on the phone. But COME ON, are you going to sell insurance to Allstate, or Financial Planning to Ameriprise, I don't think so.

Has someone ever tried to sell you what you do? What did you say?

    Many times, Jonathan.

What you say, whatever it is, just doesn't seem to get through to them. It's like they don't listen and they go right on with their pitch.

Sometimes it's just easier to say "no, thank you" and hang up.

I'd love to hear a great one-liner to respond with, if anyone has one. Particularly one dripping with sarcasm.

Yeah, a one-liner would be great. In my case, I guess that would be: Can I promote your promotion of me? best, Karen

Often. This past weekend I attended the LiveExpo at the Lynnwood Convention Center. One of the venders was a friend so I when to see her, but it was promoted as a "green living" health oriented thing so I figured I would find something interesting.

Of course there was a chiropractic booth with the doc and his assistant doing spinal screenings. Since I don't usually tell them what I do it's a little unfair, but whatever they have to say shouldn't change just because I'm in the business. Usually their speel (sp?) isn't any more authentic then anyone else's at such events.

I also get the cold calls from offices who have bought listings. After we answer the phone "Everett Chiropractic Center" they ask if we want to schedule a free spinal exam.

All in all it's no different than most of what passes for communication nowadays. Superficial, shallow and selfish at best and totally self absorbed and automatic at worst.
