Well, since you used the term 'social media' I'm going to assume you mean genres beyond social networking sites. Lately, Twitter & FriendFeed have been surprisingly helpful for learning latest news, getting quick answers, and more. It's also been distracting as hell, so hard to say it's my 'favorite'. ;)

What is your favorite social media website (other than Biznik)? Has it helped your business? How has it helped your business?

LinkedIn has helped me to develop contacts. No business yet, but I still value it and I've also found old friends & contacts there.
For my particular niche, I have drummed up some business on the Velvet Rope, which is specific to the music business. http://velvetrope.com/forums/ubbthreads.php
For great local face-to-face contact, nuthin' beats Biznik!

Twitter is what i have started liking quiet a bit offlate. The best thing about it is that everything is short and sweet. Moreover i personally feel if used intelligently one can derive a lot out of it and can use it effectively to further one's own business...

Amy, I set up my profile on LinkedIn so if people want to check on me, it's there. After setting up my profile, I think I'm done unless I'm searching for someone specific myself.
Anita, any ideas on effective use of Twitter to further a persons business.
Thanks.

I use facebook quite often, though I'm pretty lazy about these things. I find myself becoming one of those luddites who gets annoyed when new technology enters my sphere. Why can't it stay like it was in 2004?

I hear you Chris. I somewhat need to keep on top of it because of the nature of my business, but change in tech these days is happening at an insane rate. I wonder if the younger generations' brains are wired to adopt, discard, adopt much easier than many of ours? If not, seems we're heading for a time where the technorati rule the masses who can't quite keep up (sorry for the tangent John)

BTW, for those exploring Twitter (as two of us have already mentioned it), its important to know from the frontlines that there are rumors Twitter glory may already be fading. Now this is being said primarily from the early adopters, and stems from Twitter having some serious down time and management issues, but if you want to stay ahead of the curve...Pssst...check out FriendFeed.

I suppose that Facebook is my favorite, in part because the graphic design community has become so active on the site. It has also resulted in a great deal of potential client interest in my business - which has translated to projects.

there's somewhat of a TMI aspect to Facebook though and I think people are starting to better compartmentalize their behavior accordingly.
Biznik and linked in are successful in drawing information based queries. Facebook tries to straddle this, leaving one with an experience that can get mixed reviews.
You might see a neat forum or a neat article and then continually get updates that the author "received a can of whoop ass" from his wife.
Did I need to know that? (probably not)
