Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Has any of you purchased liability insurance for your business?

If so, who was your agent? Did you like the quality of service they provided? Would you refer them to me?

Having just had a neighbor's kid's car drive through my fence and hit my house this afternoon (very superficial minor damage to my house but the fence is now fiddle sticks) I realize I had a close call. He could have driven right through my office and flattened everything. (Even me and the dog, had I been home!) He was that close. Oddly, the accident seems really funny to me now, but he seriously could have single-handedly knocked my biz to its knees in one fell-swoop... I wonder if liability insurance would have helped cover my business assets had this been true?

Phew! Lucky to be alive ;) !

Now does anyone want to give me advice on this topic? I am definitely looking for referrals.

(Other moral of this story: back up your data in a safe place, kids— a place you can't accidentally drive over!!)

I've worked with Amy Voelsch at 206-660-2703 in the past with New York Life. She did my key man insurance to protect against the same kid hitting me with a car and leaving the company in a lurch.

If you have a business model that depends on a critical asset (whether information, equipment, or person) I suggest getting insured for the right items.

    Giannina,

I think it is good to interview a couple agents when deciding who to go with. I really like Krista Michelman because

    1. She's nice
    2. She knows what she is doing
    3. She is independent & therefore can shop around for you
    4. She doesn't sell minimum policies, she sells insurance for those who want to actually be covered when something happens.

Something like your situation, a home based business, might be best covered by standard insurance. She may think you need an umbrella policy so you might consider that in addition or perhaps business coverage in which case you would need a specialist like the one Krista referred me to at Silvermark.

    Krista is at krista@michelmaninsurance.net 425.398.1234 http://michelmaninsurance.net

-best of luck with the repairs

Liability insurance is to compensate others for damage that you do to them and vice versa. Their automobile insurance depending on the amount of coverage and damage should cover any damage to the house unless they are underinsured or uninsured. In that case, you would need to file a claim with your homeowner's policy and they would pursue the neighbor.

I concur with Barry that you might want to look into a key person policy. I don't know if this type of policy is life only or it has some form of disability protection.

If it doesn't have the latter, then you might want to be looking at some form of short (quack, quack) or long term disability insurance as you have a one in three chance of being disabled before age 65.

You might also want to ask Biznik member Beth Cosker for her opinion as well as she has been successful in getting supplemental group insurance for Biznik members.

If you can't retrieve your data based on your last remark, there are a number of folks who can help you with that issue.

    Hi everyone.

    Thanks for the great comments.

The teenager's auto insurance will be covering damage to my home and fence.

Keith, your comment intrigued me. See, I once heard that business liability insurance covers a small biz in case their office gets destroyed, that their equipment gets covered for replacement and you'd also get money for loss of use of your home office? I am not sure if this is true but will find out for sure when I speak with someone.

    Hi Giannia!

You know you really should still presue this coverage as Your homeowners may not cover your office expenses. The other thought is you will want to make sure that you are protecting yourself and your assets should somethin happen to a client on your property. Not sure if you have clients in your home but, a thought Or if you drive them around, you will need to be covered on that end as well.

I don't work in the P&C fiels but have been in insurance for 15+ years and can help you locate an agent.

I am not an insurance agent but I've been hanging around with some commercial underwriters.

    Here are some definitions:

    Business Owners Policy

    General Liability

    Professional Liability

    Umbrella Liability

Your homeowner's policy may cover your home office, unless you have clients visit you at your home. Check with your existing agent to see what your policy covers and if it can be endorsed to cover what you need.

You might want to also look into Errors and Omissions Insurance (E&O) (note: the link does not have a good definition as I would write it) as well if people are relying on your expertise to make certain type of decisions.

It might be the same as the Business Owners Policy (BOP) noted above.

In addition to liability insurance, you should look at LLC as well. Many individuals shifted to LLC because it gave them additional protection. The reason for Liability insurance is if something goes wrong and someone loses money from your mistake, the insurance covers you and pays. Are there or have there been instances where you were libel for something?
