Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Help Homeless Youth when you attend Bizjam

Project Cool for Back-to-School provides homeless youth with back to school supplies each fall. This year the organization anticipates that they will serve approximately 2,100 homeless students between the ages of 3 and 18, from preschool to 12th grade, living in nearly 60 different emergency shelter, transitional housing, and homeless youth drop-in centers throughout King County.

Each student will receive a backpack filled with age-appropriate school supplies, gift certificates for new shoes, dental care items and information on community resources. Project Cool allows homeless students to return to school with dignity and promise, without the stigma associated with homelessness. Starting the year on positive footing means the difference between success and failure for many of these children.

For the past 7 years I have worked with Project Cool every summer to help raise money and to gather school supplies. This year Lara and Dan have generously agreed to allow me to ask the Biznik community to please consider donating to Project Cool.

This is the 2008 School supply list :

3-ring binders (2 inch)
Ballpoint pens (black and blue)
Colored pencils (12 count non toxic)
Crayons (24 count non toxic)
Colored markers (12 count non toxic)
Composition notebooks (college ruled)
Glue sticks (non-toxic)
Highlighters (various colors non toxic)
Index dividers (for 3 ring binders)
Loose-leaf paper (wide and college ruled)
Two pocket folders
Pencils (12 count boxes)
Pencil pouches (soft)
Pencil sharpeners
Pink erasers
Rulers (12 inch)
Spiral-bound notebooks (wide and college ruled)

If you would like to donate there will be collection bins at Bizjam. If you would like to make a cash donation please see me at Bizjam and I will happily take your donation and give you a big hug and a receipt.

It takes over 900 hours to plan, transport, sort, count, assemble, purchase and distribute the backpacks, so thank you for your part in helping.

I think that this is a wonderful project and I am very proud to once again be a part of it. It is of no surprise that Dan and Lara are not only allowing this to be a part of Bizjam but are encouraging each member of the Biznik community to help give to the Seattle community of children.

I am SURE each and every Bizjam attendee will be happy to donate to such a wonderful cause.

What an absolutely amazing and rewarding campaign. Communities in Schools is one of our clients and they have a similar school supply drive every summer, with Costco as a major contributor and incredible support from the Renton community.

As a former teacher, school principal, and passionate believer in the work of nonprofits, I just wanted to say to Elizabeth:

Thanks for your involvement in this very cool project. You are truly a "business with a heart."

I will be bringing some goodies to donate and as a heads up to everyone else, Staples has some of these items on sale this week DIRT CHEAP...so get your tooshies over there and buy some stuff!

I don't care how slow your biz has been, everyone can swing a few bucks for school supplies for homeless kids. When friends w/o kids squack about school levies and the like I tell them they have two choices...pay for the kids now while they are in school or pay for them later when they're in jail. If these kids aren't in school, they're going to find less constructive ways to spend their time, which might include breaking into your home. In the immortal words of Hillary, it takes a village, people.

Ok...I am stepping off my soapbox now...

Thanks for the support Nancy, and of course Amanda. This is a terrific organization and one that I feel particularly passionate about being a mom.

I hope that the donations at Bizjam will be tremendous.

Not getting to peruse these message boards very often, I hadn't realized you had organized this before attending BizJam....can we still donate goodies to you over the summer at your myriad of other events and Happy Hours?

You are a star, Elizabeth ~ thanks for doing this!

Annie: Thanks for your generous offer. You can donate until the end of the month and then we purchase the school supplies we did not collect and start stuffing the 2100 backpacks for the kids. I am happy to drive to you and collect whatever goodies you have.

    You are spectacular! Thanks
