Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Hourly-rate financial planner?

Like a lot of people in this market, I'm ready to ditch my financial planner for a fresh perspective (it didn't help that the last concrete recommendation he made 10 months ago was to buy WAMU, thankfully I ignored him).

I'm sick of paying a bunch of annual fees to my financial person and to my mutual fund companies. I really want to find someone who I can pay on an hourly basis and who will help me (and my family) address our current allocation, invest primarily in low-cost index funds, spiders, or stable ETFs, and with whom I can periodically meet (again, on an hourly, not percentage, basis) to check up on things.

I'm hopeful that there is a Bizniker out there who meets this description, preferably in the Seattle / Puget Sound area, but if not, does anyone have any good recommendations?

Thanks in advance. --John

John: Jeff Crosby of Ameriprise in Redmond is one of the very best. I know they'll do planning for a fixed rate. He might be worth a contact. He's a great guy with a good track record. as you know, most financial advisors are paid by the transaction. I'll do some checking around for you. Good luck!

    John,

I too am not into hiring a financial planner who is advising based on where s/he gets the biggest commission. It's something many people don't realize, but this is most often the case. Most people who say they are financial advisors are basically representatives or agents of big corporations that offer incentives for placing client investments into certain funds.

I've met with John Goddard who charges hourly and is not affiliated with any company or brokerage or fund. He will advise you after meeting and looking at your complete financial situation, goals, etc. He will tell you how to set yourself up with a discount brokerage (like Vanguard) instead of having someone else take control of your finances and make money off of your transactions or amount invested.

Most people have no idea how much it costs to manage their funds or how much their "planner" (really "representative") gets from their investments over time. If you are willing to learn, you can be so much more empowered and keep more of your own money.

To be clear, I am not talking about day trading! I am talking about managing your own assets with professional insight.

John, I suggest you interview with Justin Harris. He is a straight-up guy and understands the real-life of his clients. He won't hesitate to steer you to the right thing for you, even if he could make money steering you toward something else ...

Thanks to all for the suggestions. One other recommendation that I got through an email rather than on this post was to fellow Bizniker Debbie Whitlock. Figured she deserves to be on this thread as well.

Financial planners are one of the most common referrals I make, as a money coach. I love Debbie Whitlock.

I would also recommend [REMOVED by Admin]* - he is a true fee-based planner, and they are a rare-breed. He is a CFP who does no commissions.

*FROM ADMIN: The recipient of Mikelann's recommendation asked that his name be removed by request from the State Department of Finance because it violates their policy on testimonials. Please contact Mikelann directly, if you're interested in learning his name.
