Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion How are you doing with your biz plan?

I noticed that it’s easier to get a lane for swimming in my gym since March. I wonder if people are getting relaxed with their New Year exercise plan.

So I thought I would ask – how is your biz plan? The assumption here is you have a biz plan for 2009. How are you doing with you plan? What do you think about it right now?

Well, this is a great question, Hsuan-Hua, and let me be the first to admit to the world that I have been working on my 2009 business plan since November 2008!

The positive is that it has been started and revisited over-and-over (of course, it will always be revisited throughout the year), but it would be nice to have it done and fully implemented!

Having just moved to a new city, it's not a fun experience to be flying by the seat of my pants, following a partially-completed biz plan.

Anyone else in the same boat as I am?

    Tshombe,

I didn't realize you moved to Portland. Wish you the best for the move.

It's good to have a plan in place and revise it periodically. When you revise it too often, you are shooting moving targets. It will be hard to manage.

It might be easier to have a smaller plan in your life transition period.

Hi Hsuan-Hua Chang I'm glad you asked this question. I wrote a completely new business plan last April and now the year is looking back at me with a grimace. Now I realize how naive I have been in thinking my goals would remain the same throughout the year - how was I to know the economy would test me? Still I am forever grateful that I wrote the plan I can ignore in the days approaching my test year end. Now I know how much a business plan is like a living, breathing website. Changing, adjusting and reflecting on what works, what doesn't and what will become the approaching year business goals.

Here at Biznik we are reviewing the overall business plan on a quarterly basis, and our personal goals on a monthly basis.

We work for a dynamic company, and the world is changing rapidly around us.

Now, maybe more than ever, it is important to have a high-level goal, and to continually measure your daily actions against that lofty goal.

As the old curse goes, "May you live in interesting times..."

Hey thanks for the tip Hsuan-Hua Chang. I did check out the Harvard Business article and I am now subscribed to their Daily Stat and weekly hotlist. It is all quite interesting.

    Christian,

Thank you for sharing Biznik process. Yes. It's important to have a goal before working on the action plans.

I review my business plan on a quarterly basis and see if I've fulfilled my goals and actions as well as develop new ones. It helps keep me on track and also provides me an opportunity to revise the plan on a fairly frequent basis...I think all business owners should review their plans every three months instead of just once or twice a year...keeps the plan dynamic.
