Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Ideas for volunteering?

Hi there! 'Tis the time of year to be thankful for what we have and giving of what we got (actually it wouldn't hurt to be like that all year). I'm looking for some volunteer opportunities, preferably with kids. I looked into reading to kids with United Way, but scheduling was tough as I'm pretty well-occupied during business hours. I also don't want to be clocking any more time in front of my laptop.

Do you know of organizations that engage volunteers perhaps during the week after 5pm? Maybe weekends?

I've done a ton of volunteering from teaching students how to make games to being a camp counselor overseas. I'm definitely open. BONUS if I get to meet other Bizniks this way!

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you Rebecca for starting this thread.

Consider the kids at The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Both child patients and the children and siblings of patients have needs that volunteers can address. I was a patient family volunteer for a couple of years until my work demands made it impossible to be available in a meaningful way.

I'm available to answer questions about my experience.

Volunteer Match (www.volunteermatch.com) is a great way to find all types of opportunities - you can search by interest or geographic area.

Plus I know of three great nonprofits that work with kids. Two - The Service Board and Burton Chill - teach at-risk kids to snowboard, plus The Service Board also adds community projects to the mix.

And Outdoors for All works with disabled kids and adults. Snow sports are their primary focus, but they have adaptive sports options year round.

All three need coaches plus other volunteers.

Get information about The Service Board at http://www.theserviceboard.org/get_involved.html or visit the Outdoors for All Web site at http://skiforall.org (they used to be Skiforall) for information about that program. I only have national-level contacts at Burton Chill, but they are advertising on VolunteerMatch for local needs.

If you want more information about any of the programs, contact me. I've worked with The Service Board and Outdoors for All and probably will work with Chill too this winter.

We volonteer at Farestart. You don't work with kids but it is nights and weekends mostly. I find it rewarding because of Farestarts' high success rate and they give you dinner afterward! Art T.
