A favorite of mine is "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell.

Just to confirm, you are speaking of "marketing" versus "sales" books?

Marketing being defined as everything that happens BEFORE you meet a customer, and Sales being everything that happens WHEN you meet a customer.

Yes, marketing. I'm going on vacation and wanted a light (but productive) read.

"The Marketing Gurus" by Chris Murray. In each chapter he synopsizes and distills one of 17 different top marketing books by, well, "marketing gurus" (Seth Godin, Guy Kawasaki, Jack Trout etc, Geoffrey Moore. etc.). It's a great way to read 17 top marketing books in under 300 pages.

I also recommend Seth Godin. Inspiring, fun to read, and not Evil.

Duct Tape Marketing, by John Jantsch.

This book is made for people like me who feel really goofy doing marketing. No disrespect to the kick-ass marketers in the crowd -- a lot of the stuff I've read just feels unnatural to me.

Roy H. Williams "The Wizard of Ads", or any of the other Wizard of Ad books he has. It is a series of one or two page chapters, light & fun and yet a real education.

Interestingly enough, the most influential book I've read (and use) to help me plan my marketing is a sales book by Jeffrey Gitomer - The Sale Bible. [http://www.gitomer.com/The-Sales-Bible-by-Jeffrey-Gitomer-pluSBS.html]

Why a sales book to create my marketing plans? Well, because the goal is to sell my work, seminars, studio space, curation services, events, etc. Understanding sales (its process, inspiration, tactics, strategies, etc.) is critical to creating an effective marketing plan.

The book is a delight to read. Eye opening. Inspiring. Entertaining. Even humbling. It helped me to alter my relationship to sales and sales people. And in turn I'm a better salesperson, a better marketer, and my company is bringing in a lot more cash, the lifeblood of any business.

I second Seth Godin, All Marketers are Liars is a great one to start with and you can read it in an afternoon.

I recommend "Marketing that Matters : 10 practices to profit your business and change the world" by Chip Conley and Eric Friedenwald-Fishman. The authors founded the Metropolitian Group and have a sustainable model in practice. I attended a presentation sponsored by the Sustainable Business Network of Portland @ CubeSpace to hear Friedenwald-Fishman. A quick read with great information! FYI "“A quick read that is laced with penetrating clarity and marketing insights relevant to both large and small companies alike. Carve out a place for this book that is within arm’s reach. Marketing That Matters will help you get your message across, forge a stronger, more intimate relationship with your target customer, and avoid the pitfalls and general mistrust of traditional and shallow ‘caused-based marketing.’” – Steve Smith, Founder of TAZO TEA
