Please join me in turning a deaf ear to the increasingly negative media. At what point will advertisers stop sponsoring these broadcasts that tell Americans to put their heads in the sand and give up? I can only judge by my own experiences and yes, it’s been the most challenging year for our business since 2001. But guess what? We are really good at what we do. We help business grow and have been doing so for nearly 24 years. Not all 24 have been a cakewalk. That’s sort of what makes getting out of bed in the morning fun. Not knowing what is going to happen. Accepting challenges and feeling the satisfaction of meeting them. Since I stopped listening to bad news, Open Skye has begun work for 3 brand new clients. Clients who know that the only way to succeed is to continue to market themselves and outwork and outsmart their competitors. I’m not suggesting that ignorance is bliss. But I would suggest choosing a sitcom at 11PM, going to bed in a good mood, and waking up ready to take on whatever is in your path. Who’s in?

I've been in for a while. The commercials grate on me, and the spin on the news grates even more. I don't own a TV, don't subscribe to a newspaper, and get my news more or less serendipitously via the Internet. Works for me.

How long have you been disconnected from the media? Glad to hear your business is forging ahead!

I'm with you! Although I do give in to the temptation once in a while to "see what's going on," I definitely notice the effects of watching all the poison the media feeds the public... When I choose to focus on positive things, my mood and energy is much better. That is so key to my success and happiness.

Great book: Money and the Law of Attraction, by Esther and Jerry Hicks. ("new-age", but very practical, common sense.)

I also enjoy www.globalgoodnews.com. Does anyone else know of positively-oriented news sites?

I've been on a mass-media fast from around 1998 - soon after I left home for college. I got a mega-dose of NPR growing up that contributed to a lot of my depression as a teenager. I think news is completely skewed and it scares me how people who are in Washington leading the country live in an artificial news bubble - I wonder what effect it has on our policy.

Lately though I've become semi-interested and inspired just because of Obama - finally someone who is an inspiring leader! I have watched him speak a few times. But besides that, I mostly get my news from The Daily Show and Twitter. =)

Ondine, you might check out Yes! magazine for a positive news source.

Hi Kevin, Thanks for posting on this topic. I've been on a "selective media diet" for several weeks now. Many of my clients are fearful to the point of anxiety about the economy and much of it is due to the constant barrage of media doom and gloom. Yes, it's bad, but we can make it worse by obsessing about it and wringing our hands 24/7.

It's time for a break and some perspective. Connect with the things that are going right in your life and be thankful. Take some deep breaths. Put your energy into creating, rather than worrying.

Emma, thanks for mentioning Yes! magazine-- I'll check that out.

I watch the news each morning while I'm working my stomach... if I had skipped that today I wouldn't have seen Bush dodge incoming shoes. That's been a laugh that will last and last and last. (But I share your view and agree with your approach in general; that short exposure to the regular news media is all I allow).

This is awesome feedback, and an indication of how we will rebound and thrive again! Via the self motivated positive individual!

I'm with you, Kevin. Like you, we've been around for a while (16 years) and have seen the cycles. Yes, this one is challenging, but that's why most of us are entrepreneurs, because we love challenges!

Refraining from getting sucked in by the whiny TV newscasters is no problem because we cancelled our cable two months ago and guess what? We don't even miss it!

We listen to the 5-minute PBS radio news update each morning at breakfast (just to be sure the world didn't fall apart overnight) and don't listen to a lot of the rest.

And Dennis, I hear you. The shoe toss was a priceless piece of entertainment. Watched it on the CNN website.

Yes! is bar far the best magazine I've seen. I've had a subscription for years so that I could put it in my reception room.

When on your short news spurts check out Democracy Now. I like it because you can choose to watch it early AM on tv, listen on radio OR just look up online as you see fit--lots of options for an excellent news source. They were some of the only unembedded reporters during early Iraq Invasion. Amy Goodman has won several international awards for her journalism work.

I try to stay tapped into what's going on because I think it's important to have a country and culture of people who are not checked out, but I agree with limiting TV especially and news intake in general--definitely not before bed! As Louse Hay says "You don't want to fill your mind with that stuff before you go into your rest and rejuvenation mode."

I'm in! I haven't canceled my cable yet, but I stopped watching the 'news' a couple of years ago.

I agree with Karrie, there are much better ways to keep informed than watching the 10 o'clock news.

I, too, am selective about my "news" exposure... and I'm selective about the news exposure I seek for my clients. I think often of Author/radio journalist Wes Nisker's sage advice: If you don't like the news, go out and make your own!
