Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Purchase/rent a projector for PPT?

For my workshops, I'll need equipment that can project a PowerPoint presentation onto a screen or wall. Any suggestions on what to buy? Can I rent one? Can I borrow one for the day?

Projector can run from $700 - $2400, depending on what you need. Focus has some that are reasonable. You can rent one from Barr AV. I have not talked to them in years, but if it helps, use my name and mention dBug. Either way you want to insure that you get the cables that will translate from your computer to the projector and the screen.

I have no idea if anyone in Biznik would have one to loan, but never hurts to ask.

Projectors can be purchased for less than $500. I bought on Amazon recently.

Shoot me an email if you would like to talk about renting it. (I do use it regularly.)

I bought a refurbished Epson at their site for a bit over $400. Works like a charm. I ended up finally buying one as it was always tough to find one to borrow and day rentals were kind of pricey from what I found. Might want to take up Laura on her offer!

If you are going to use it with any frequency, I suggest you buy one. My business does rent ours at a deep discount to any place I've seen. $50 per day.

I should mention ebay also has a selection of projectors. (most of them seemed to be missing cords, broken lenses, etc.)

I also looked at the big box stores, but those were in the range that David mentioned above. The big box stores are targeting people who use them for home entertainment systems.

    Hope that helps, laura

    Hi Lori,
Projectors are not for the weak of heart! You are about to embark on an arduous journey... :)

Generally speaking, you can rent them for around $100/day, or buy a new one for somewhere between $600 and $2500.

There are two problems with owning them:
    1. Anything at a "reasonable" price (say, less than $1000) is going to be pretty weak, with poor color, and almost requires a completely dark room.
    2. The replacement cost for bulbs. They don't last as long as you expect them to, and they are extraordinarily expensive. Some of them run hundreds of dollars!

As a starting point you can look for the number of "lumens" the projector is rated for. The "right" number of lumens is a subjective thing, but really anything less than 3000 is going to dictate too many restrictions for it to be a general use solution. (Limitations include: The size of the room, amount of ambient light, color quality, etc.)

Of course, the brighter and more precise the detail (and colors), the more expensive the replacement bulbs are.

So it is like a three axis teeter-totter that only you can balance: Cost vs Flexibility vs Image Quality. Decide which two are most important to you, and then Google "LCD projector rental Seattle" and you will see where to try them out.

Best of luck with it! I've been looking for my personal balance point for years, and still haven't purchased one.

Thanks for the advice, everyone, and thanks to Laura. I'll eventually buy a projector (I hope - once the biz is actually making some money) but for the near future ... that is, the afternoon of December 5 ... I'd need to rent one. Does anyone else have one that I could rent?
