Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Sending out a message of peace to Biznik members in Pakistan

I know that I often take my life in the US for granted. Last night I was having dinner with some friends and we were talking about who we would throw into a volcano if we had two choices....

Ann Coulter and Karl Rove Dick Cheney and Alf from 80's television Kid Rock and Warren Jeffs

you know...that game

It is all in good fun. Regardless of how angry or disgusted I am with my government I can openly have a conversation like this without fear of persecution.

Let us all hope that our fellow Biznik members will one day be as lucky as we all are.

Let's also hope that someday we will care about our government policies as much as they do. It is hard to shake the shadow of apathy from our privileged lives.

I havent been on Biznik for long time. I just read your message. So repling to your posting couple of months later. :) Just want send out a message the "State of emergency" was not related to the local people. It was merely political reasons. So everything was fine here. I love democracy, but looking at history and the way things work here. Democracy will never work in the Muslim worlds. Why not? The literacy rate in Pakistan, Iraq and Afganistan is very low. (Census here consider this number of people who can sign and don't use thumb print). Therefore uneducated population should be governed by a monarchy system that doesnt abuse people rights.

Shouldn't the object be to educate the masses rather then throw them into a lot and hope for a benevolent monarch's kindness? One thing history has taught us is that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The world does need functioning democracies in the Muslim world. They should be functioning governments that are from the people that work for the people. Saying that they are hopeless will not make their world any better. Art T.

You are correct about educating the population. Pakistan has tried again and again forcing education, but people here are not willing to learn. As for your other point, its best you read the Middle East history on the stability before democracy was introduced, and compare it with what is now. Majority would prefer the old way of rule. If Sharia laws (Muslim laws) are used countries would be more stable. ie Saudi Arabia.
