Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion Spark Tagline & CrowdSourced Logo Feedback

I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with 'crowdsourcing' using CrowdSpring to produce a logo (How it works: you offer a price and then are guaranteed a minimum of 25 submissions.) Check out my logo options here, I'm curious to see what YOU think.

(*For the record, and in support of the excellent biznik designers here, I should say that I think that developing a long term relationship with a designer you like is the best option. However, if you need something simple, fast or probably cheap (or haven't yet found that person) using something like CrowdSpring seems to be a pretty cool way to go.)

Second request for feedback: I've been battling with choosing the best tagline for SSM. Though I do social media consulting and development for a variety of genres (podcasting, blogs, social sites, etc), my focus seems to be heading in building online communities, so which is your favorite:

Spark Social Media:

  1. -"Building Online Communities"
  2. -"Igniting Online Communities"
  3. -"We Build Online Communities"
  4. -"Enriching & Expanding the Conversation"
  5. -"Enriching & Expanding Your Conversation"
  6. -"Igniting & Empowering Online Communities"
  7. You suggest

Notes on words:

  • While community seems to be the most appropriate (and popularly to be used) word, some people don't like or get it. So is there a better one?
  • Enrich (with new layers of connection).
  • Expand (as many are looking to the marketing/reach aspect).
  • Empower (as it has to do with giving new social tools)
  • Conversation (like because SSM services are not always a 'place' like community)
  • Ignite (because it plays off spark well)
  • build because at heart, thats the end product people want

Who is my target market? I haven't refined as much as I'd like to, but so far its been mostly small businesses, associations, networks, non-profits, and people who are gathering community around an event/project/hobby/etc.

Thanks for any thoughts or feedback! Love ya, Leif

Leif. This is a terrific concept and I love what the designers came up with for you. Have you made a decision yet which one you are going with?

Well, you can see from the link which are my favorite because I put a link to the sorted list (the 'buyer' score is me). I'm definitely fond of using the 'a' and 'p' as speech bubbles, coming together to create the spark. However, I like KepiTink's thicker/web2.0 font and the combo bubble is interesting if he could make the 'a' clearer and differentiate the bubbles.

What's your favorite? And which tagline do you like best?

Leif, I also like the logo you like but I like the contrast of blue and red.

A suggestion: Expanding Your Options for Conversation Online.

    Too long?

Leif: I agree with your feelings about KepiTink and would like to see the "a" a bit clearer.

I like Kaust's design the best actually more than likely because it clearly looks like speech bubbles/thought bubbles.

I like "Igniting Online Communities" and perhaps once you figure out your target market you could add that to your line...

It's interesting that you include the disclaimer about "developing a long term relationship with a designer you like is the best option" in your post. That is not the problem most professional designers have with such sites.

The primary issue for most professional design organizations, and truly professional graphic designers, is that no designer should do speculative - or "spec" - work as a condition for getting paid for their efforts. The NO!SPEC movement is growing:

    http://www.no-spec.com

A problematic issue for many clients of such sites is the "designers" simply posting the copyrighted design work of others as their own in an effort to meet the deadline posted and "win" the competition for the low fees available. Several of my actual designs, a blatant rip-offs of my own concepts, have been posted on similar sites recently - as have the logo creations of many of my design friends and peers.

I suppose my warning to consumers of sites such as CrowdSpring is: Buyer beware - you may get a design that is worth exactly what you pay for, (which is not a lot), or the major legal problems of a new logo that is not truly original.

Hi Leif, I can certainly see how you are excited about the options you get at this web site. What a choice, and the price.

But I also understand what Jeff is saying as well. Having spent the last fifteen years designing logos for companies, I can relate to the frustrations of designers who get undercut by so many online logo design companies like this. And it's true, I bet they do "rip off" concepts, as I can't see how else you can making a living doing this.

It's the same issue with stock photography companies. The low priced stock out there is amazing. And photographers constantly have to battle that issue as well.

The problem I always have had is I can understand someone grabbing at a offer to have a logo designed at such a low cost. With so many small businesses having to stretch their budget. But they should also take heed of the warning Jeff gave. It is often you get what you pay for.

And designers will continue to do what they have done in the past. Find the customers who are willing to pay for the professional services they offer and build that relationship. As for the online logo machines, they will keep on keeping on and there will be plenty of customers looking for that deal.

Logo....I have two... My first instinct (just cause I LOVE green!) is the all green one by lightbox.

However in looking at the green one it does not effectively 'show' what Spark represents... so I would have to say the one after that, red/orange by creativetw is the one. You have the conversation clouds (or whatever you call them) that are somewhat joined together plus you have 'people' which equal social connection!

    Tag Line:

    Enriching Social Connections

    Igniting Social Conversation

    Social Connections With Power

I dont like the word 'and' in the tag line....seems like it might flow together better if you leave it out????

Bad Bob. I didn't even give you any feedback -- which is what you were asking for.

As far as the logo, again, wow, what a lot of choices.

I do like the use of the speech bubbles. The one's where the font is a little abstract -- they look good but are a little hard to read at first glance. (is that really a "p" or "a"?)

The people icons, I like what they represent, but I have seen way to many of those exact generic icons in various logos, personally I would stay away from them.

color - with working on so many logos, it so many times ends up being a personal choice thing. I like solid strong colors myself.

To pick a specific one I like, well, unfortunately the time I would spend analyzing each one, is way more than I can offer right now : )

Taglines - I like Igniting Social Conversation And with that I'm sure certain logos would fit better than others!

Good luck - you have a task ahead of you!

    Thanks for the feedback folks.

I had a hunch the crowdsourcing issue would touch some buttons, and I appreciate the insights both Bob & Jeff shared. Crowdsourcing is a growing reality for many different industries, so the pros/cons are going to need to be talked about.

    • Banu, I like the tagline but yes, i think its a bit too long. If possible, I'm going for the 3 word magic.

    • Elizabeth, logos are now down between Kepitink & McKellier's. I like that tagline too, and I guess its always changeable huh?

    • Rebecca -I agree with you about trying to avoid the 'and'. Not crazy about creativew's logos -great on ideas, but look is often clipart-ish.

    • Bob, I understand the overwhelm factor! If you follow the link above, it sorts to my top ones --would love if folks chose between one of those!

    • Not sure what I think about the 'social conversation' as it doesn't tell the online aspect and it repeats a word in the biz name (social media).

Okay, time to narrow it down...

Tagline - I was thinking one thing and doing another. Igniting Online Communities - I do like that better than the "social conversation". I really like incorporating the word ignite.

So looking at the logos, I believe your top ones are the first listed... I like the first one the best. It's nice and clean, easy to read. I would stay away from the second one -- inversed -- as you would always need a dark box around it and it would be less flexible. The only suggestion on that one is make "Social Media" a bit bigger, and also increase the size of the tagline. I'm afraid you'll lose both when getting this down to biz card size...

    That's my 2 cents :-)

Thanks Bob, I think I will focus on that tagline for now. I've decided on that first logo (with the star/spark) but am working with the creative to tweak it further, prob change star to something else. I'll post a link here when its all done.

Okay, logo is 95% finished (getting final draft tomorrow). Check it out at the Spark Social Media site and let me know what you think. And any feedback (or add Qs) on the site would be great while you're there ;)

This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
