Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion The Best Websites to Publish Your Articles

You probably heard it a million times: “On the Internet, content is king”. What is that supposed to mean? Well, it means that search engines love great content, but most importantly, so do users!

If you are a handyman you can probably write an article on choosing the perfect handyman. If you are a business consultant you can write about business issues. But guess what? It doesn’t matter how good your articles are if nobody reads them!

So, how do you get people to read your articles? Well, you can do it the hard way –post them on your website and try to get as much traffic as you can, or the easy way –leverage the power of other websites that have thousands of visitors every single day and amazing authority as far as the search engines concern.

Although I have my own blog, I also use several Web 2.0 social networking websites to reach thousands of people every day with useful information.

These are some of the social networks that I use:

WordPress – www.wordpress.com WordPress is an excellent blogging platform.

Squidoo – www.squidoo.com Create your lens, publish your articles, and network with other users.

Hubpages – www.hubpages.com Create your own page and spread your content.

Wetpaint – www.wetpaint.com One of the best Wiki platforms out there.

Clearblogs – www.clearblogs.com Another awesome blogging service.

Blogspot – www.blogger.com A free blogging service owned by Google.

MySpace – www.myspace.com One of the most popular social networks on earth, owned by Microsoft. Use the blog feature to publish your content.

AOL Journals – http://peopleconnection.aol.com/blogs Another blog service. This one is owned by AOL.

Quizilla – www.quizilla.com Create your page and show it to the world!

Bumpzee – www.bumpzee.com List all your blogs here and give them maximum exposure.

Multiply – www.multiply.com Create your page and list your blogs.

Experience – www.experienceproject.com Another social networking site that allows you to share your content.

Scribd – www.scribd.com An amazing service to publish your documents.

NewsVine – www.newsvine.com A collaboration-based news site.

Facebook – www.facebook.com I’m sure you’ve heard about this one. Facebook is the biggest social network in the world. Create your own page, join groups and interact in the community, create events, network with others, and create your own group to get the most out of this fantastic tool.

Zimbio – www.zimbio.com Publish your articles and submit your blogs here.

Wikispaces – www.wikispaces.com Another amazing Wiki platform.

Tumblr – www.tumblr.com Post your article with a few clicks only.

Flickr – www.flickr.com Share your photos and include your articles too!

Twitter – www.twitter.com Twitter allows you to let the world know what you are up to.

Mahalo – www.mahalo.com Publish your articles for free.

Associated Content – www.associatedcontent.com One of the most prestigious article distribution services out there.

Helium – www.helium.com Post your articles here. It’s very easy to use.

E How – www.ehow.com Become an expert and publish valuable advice.

Wiki How – www.wikihow.com Give advice and become a respected member of the community.

Ezine Articles – www.ezinearticles.com The best article distribution service ever.

Go Articles – www.goarticles.com In my opinion, the second best article distribution service.

Articles Base – www.articlesbase.com Another site where you can publish your articles.

Article Alley – www.articlealley.com Free article publishing service.

Google Knol - http://knol.google.com An article distribution service owned by Google.

43 Things – www.43things.com Share that thing that you always wanted to do or your experiences about things that you have done already.

Well, that’s it. The list could be a lot longer but this is a really good starting point. Remember that it’s a lot smarter to leverage the authority and search engine rankings of recognized social sites than trying to accomplish the same with your own website only.

    Zeke-

Thank you. You answered some questions I have had on my to do list of a while; which was research these various social websites.

Do you have a rule of thumb about how often we should post to maximize our searches? I post to my own blog a few times a week and then of course, Biznik. Thanks for doing the leg work on this.

I'm glad I could help, Christa.

If the articles link to your website, don't post more than twice a week because Google doesn't like it when you build a lot of links all of a sudden.

    Dear Zeke:

Thanks for the information I've taken a note and shared with a collegue in my office. We just got back from RE Bar Camp Seattle 2009 at the Zillow headquarters and heard a lot about these items, but not all of them.

Do you have any experience with Blog Talk Radio Show?

    Cheers!

One of my clients, SubmitYourArticle.com, is a service I use myself. For a small monthly fee (around $40), you upload your article one time and they distribute it to many of the sites mentioned above for you. It's a time saver and this service, unlike some others, screens the material first to make sure it is of sufficient quality and is appropriate for a business or family-friendly audience. The time savings is worth it to me.

Great stuff Zeke, thanks for sharing. Maybe you can offer a suggestion... all of this sounds great but it is very overwhelming. Where to start?

What are your recommendations for accomplishing an effective and thorough use of some/all of these social marketing platforms without spending 5 hours a day on it?

Also, I've heard that search engines may punish you for publishing duplicate content on multiple sites. I can't imagine writing a different version of each article. What do you think?

  • Zeke Camusio
Posted by Zeke Camusio, Aspen, Colorado | Mar 10, 2009

Spend whatever time you want. You can spend an hour a day, or five, or ten. It's up to you. When you can afford it, you should outsource it.

As far as spinning the articles to avoid duplicate content, we use a software; doing it manually, for all the clients we have, would take weeks. But if you only post one article per week, don't worry about duplicate content.

That was a great list, but who has time to be on so many sites and do our real work?

Same thing as all of the social media sites, I am on many, but spend most of my time focused on 3, LinkedIn, ecademy and Facebook. Another one I use is Ning since several groups I had belonged to have migrated to Ning.

Dan, that's precisely why I asked my question.

I've filled out the forms on several of those sites, never to return again. Now that I know a little more about "keyword rich" writing, I could do a better job, but I'm still not going back to the vast majority of them.

Ditto with social networking sites. Most are junk when it comes to functionality - and many, like Facebook, just tries to move you around their site. I wouldn't waste my time there even if I had the time.

I agree with the above two comments. The other question I'd have is how much business these sites actually generate? It's great to be visible, but if it doesn't generate business, then it just ends up being a time consuming hobby. I'm on a few of these sites, giving them a try for now, but fitting in time to be on them and be active on them is challenging enough.

This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
