Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion The Holiday Season & Biz: Slow as Snow or Rapid as Reindeer?

Since most of the people I talk to and work with are indie biz professionals, I notice that there's a big effect the holiday season has on us.

The funny thing is, though, that this effect is one of two polar opposites -- either your biz slows ways down due to the holidays, or it gets crazy busy.

I'd love to know more, especially since I'm still learning what to expect in my business during this season. (Right now, feels kinda slow...but I did take five days off for Thanksgiving.)

What are the holidays doing to your business?

That normal. It gets even slower as the month continues. We are looking under every rock to see if we can sell a unit or 2 + during the holiday season, but so far it's just silent.

The only place I see it is in a service that fits the season, but especially the retail side is doing so much discounting that even they are seeing less customers.

I think that holidays tend to slow down - thinking about Justin and his flower business is probably swamped - and State taxes are due end of next month. So give yourself a break as well. It may even be the best time to over the business and plan for what you want to change, do different, improve, etc.

Because we offer products and have seasonal (fall & christmas) items we are typically busy from oct-dec and we always have last minute orders.

I always look forward to january when I can take a breather, go over inventory and then decide what, if any, changes to do in the coming year.

Surprisingly enough, my business is pretty busy.

While the market for web redesigns and e-commerce development drops off mid-November to eliminate the possibility of issues during the holiday season, I have 5 clients right now in queue and two I'm working on.

I must say, that while I am glad to have the extra work, it puts more stress on the holidays.

I'm usually slow as snow at this time but have been blessed with being as rapid as a reindeer this November and December!! I believe this has been my most prosperous year to date, as well. We'll see what shakes out when I have my taxes done. Let's hope this follows me into the New Year, too!

We deliberately create a slow-down in our work this time of year- we schedule three weeks off from mid-december through the first week in January.

However, we've also run specials during that time for our products and had fabulous uptakes. And, because we're not selling commercial products, it's hard to say whether one month is 'slow' or not, because we have people signing up, and paying for, programs that run in 2008.

As far as my time spent on work projects, it's up, because we've set a Dec 15 deadline for a product release.

So why the heck am I here instead of working! (back to work!)
