Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion What do you need?

I’ve been browsing a number of profiles and I’m a little perplexed by the content left behind on those little “What _____ needs right now” chalkboards that all members have available on their profile page.

In most cases I find the listing to be vague and timeless, which also leads me to pointless. Many members opted to list things that I couldn’t possibly help with; at least not in a way where it would be noticeable to the person I’m attempting to help.

I’ve come across everything from: I need bank loans to I need referrals. I’ve also found I need more visitors in my store, people who want a website built, opportunities to speak to groups and people interested in buying houses.

I even found, "I need more visitors to my website." I clicked through on that one (mission accomplished / glad to help) then came right back to Biznik to continue reading.

If a family member was going to the store and asked on their way out if you needed anything, most likely you wouldn’t say; “Gee, I think I need referrals.”

You would probably mention something specific, “Hey, pick me up a roll of duct tape. I’ve got some marketing on the calendar for next week and I’m going to need it.”

I found one need listed that seemed actionable. Someone posted a need for a blogging expert. Finally, the light came on, the wheels started turning and I was able to more clearly define something I need.

Trust me. It’s not elaborate, but it is a need. I need a hard copy of the June 4, 2009 edition of Business Week Magazine. (details on my page)

What do you need?

Hey Mark, that is one loaded question : )

No, seriously, I think you are onto something with the one item you found actionable. I remember Lara, co-founder of Biznik, telling me they had started that initially with the idea of people using the community to fill your needs. Such as, I need a plumber, I need someone to do my taxes, I need.....

Yes, the needs are varied, and when someone says they need clients, or referrals, or more jobs. All I can think of, is who doesn't?

It will be interesting to follow this conversation.

Great topic - and as Bob said, you're on to something. I myself am consumed with a huge project, turning out a magazine. My needs are so numerous…it's hard to pick one.

This post, I hope, does for others what it just did for me. To reassess what it is I really need and actually use the tools available to get those needs met. Thank you.

    Bob, Christian,

Thanks for the feedback. I hope that we can all take a second look at this little feature and find a way to make it a little more useful.

It amazes me how often referrals begin to flow freely when people get more specific about that they actually need.

And, seriously... I do NEED a hard copy of the Business Week Magazine that I mentioned. I've checked with every client I have that provides magazines for their waiting room and none of them have it. -shakes head-

Hey Mark, you can order a back copy from Business Week via their website. Or maybe you are looking to get it sooner!

  • Mark Combs
Posted by Mark Combs, Fernandina Beach, Florida | Jul 17, 2009

I hadn't even thought of that option.

I am looking to get it sooner & really wanted to test the waters to see if someone was ready to be filled with the rush of adrenaline that comes with thinning the magazine pile next to the couch and mailing a copy across country to a stranger.

Let's call it a social experiment for illustration purposes, as I do have a networking group presentation & maybe even topic matter for an upcoming article in mind.

If one doesn't show up by the end of next week, I'll certainly look into placing that order. Thanks for the insight.

Mark. Thank you for this discussion. I have reworded my need so it is not vauge.

What I need: Entrepreneurs to collaborate on Investing In Women. Options include reciprocal marketing, link exchanges, adding resources and articles, offering free services for the newsletter. I am open to new suggestions.

I also need paid advertisers for http://iiwomen.com.

Paid advertisements and donations will fund our micro-grant program for businesses in the USA.

    Is that clear enough? Leah

It does not bother me if someone posts a vague need. I like your idea of very actionable things, but I posted that I need support and encouragement.

Maybe someone will read that and tune in to the types of things I want to get out of a networking site such as this one.

What bugz me, though, -- personally -- is people who seem to be using the Needs item as yet another sales device:

    • I need... to tell you all about the exciting new discounts I'm offering, over at http://www...
    • I need... to invite you to attend my exciting webinar event!
    • I need... to ask you if you'd like to bring MASSIVE TRAFFIC to your site RIGHT NOW!

There is a specific place on this site for offers, and that's really neat. For me, the Needs section seems about finding out what people actually, themselves, as it relates to their busiensses, actually need?

Maybe people have a hard time saying that they need something? Or maybe they just have a hard time relaxing the self-promotion habit?

    Who knows?

Leah - I like the change. I got sidetracked by collaborative and reciprical at first, but then sorted through things to get a better picture of what you're hoping that folks will provide.

I think I may have gone with something a little closer to the Homer Simpson version (not quite what Rick said, but...)

Maybe: I need content for my Ezine about . This would include articles about , and link exchange opportunities with websites that focus on _____ .

Also, if I'm fuzzy up front about what "Investing in Women" is or might include, I'm most likely not going to be curious enough to chase down a website for more info.

To steal a line from Joe Miller (Denzel Washington in Philadelphia) "Talk to me like I'm a six year old."

I may have the ability and the desire to help, but only if I'm certain what it is that you actually need.

Christopher - Right on the money. I couldn't agree with you more about the "using it as a sales pitch forum" That's a total turn off, not only from the "what do you need?" stand point, but also from the overall profile.

I like your idea of "I need support and encouragement" But tell me specifically how I can do that. Because given the options and the direction, I might step up to the plate and offer one or both.

Rick - Your comment cracked me up. I've gotta say I got a good laugh out of it and would be tempted to buy you one if I knew your favorite watering hole and suds of choice.

It does give a clear picture of the site as opposed to the name only. Leah

I love this conversation because it's helping inform the direction we want to move the "I Need" feature. Ideas include using tagging/keywords to match your "need" with content in others' "about me" fields.

I've often wondered if changing the verbiage from "I Need..." to something else would help deter people from the perennial, "I need clients..." - thoughts?

The next thing I need to move forward...

To get to the next step...

    I could use...

    I need help with...

In the next week, I need...

Great conversation! As one bugged by the inverse sales-pitch needs as well, its a 'needed' conversation (though it seems to come up here semi-annually).

Lara: I think that guiding the needs with phrases is a good idea, and I think that tagging is a good idea as well as it would serve aggregating/matching needs. Would love to see both combined. -Leif

This is great. Helping me think about this too!

    Reflection has got me thinking,

I need people to bounce ideas off of.

I need people who have similar challenges of a small business, but different experience.

I need places to admit I don't know what I'm doing, in a space where others are struggling, working at it, succeeding, with common issues..

I know why the promotional "needs" entries bothered me: They made me feel lonely.

Here, where there's an opportunity to actually connect about what we do, who we are, and why we're doing it ... to waste this opportunity with another place to try to sell something ... I think that is what I was feeling.

    Missed opportunity.

It's almost like, can we let down our guard for a minute and stop selling, and share who we are?

I looked up an old acquaintance recently, and the first thing she said to me, was to tell me about her exciting MLM opportunity. It made me so sad, and I have not connected with her again yet.

An excellent post, Mark! I've been inspired. I used to have one of the "Send me some clients!" -type of Need. Now it asks for advice on things that have been rolling around in my brain for months. Here's what it says:

Brainstorming! Please send me one quick tip on how I can do one of the following: - Rewrite one existing sentence on my Web site with a more active voice. - Get more of my clients and prospects to give me referrals. - Stop procrastinating!

    Paul,

Now I'm inspired! I like what you've got going with "Rewrite one existing sentence on my website with a more active voice."

What a great double purpose this serves! First a door is open for the edit-conscious to offer critique and suggestions for content rewrite (you know there's scads of people who are just twitching to do that) and secondly (most importantly) it pulls people to your website and encourages them to read intently (in an effort to help you, of course) but at the same time it generates traffic.

    Brilliant!

I've got a suggestion on the second request, and I'm going to put off the third one for now, knowing that it will most likely still be around later.

I use Biznik to get referrals. Shhhhh

    Here's how easy it is:

    1. Invite a current business partner to sit down with you to review your biznik page (content review, second opinion, etc. any excuse to get together)

    2. While you are together, send an invite to their E-mail and help them set up their own page. They WILL appreciate help from someone who knows their way around the site and can minimize the learning curve.

    3. Once you're done setting up their new page, take them to the invite page and help them to compose a personal invite letter to invite 2-3 of their business associates. Include in the note that YOU will be happy to meet with them to "assist with page set up and give them a tour of the site." Who's going to turn that down???

Now you have the oppty to meet 2-3 new people and haven't put any "pressure" on your client to "give me a referral"

Of course, you get the open door to Elevator Speech the Biznik newbies while setting up their page AAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNDDDDD you repeat the process to quickly get another 2-3 referrals out of the food chain.

It's really easy... 10 minutes and a cup of coffee is the perfect relaxed meet and greet.

    Just-a-Thot

And yes, I was totally motivated to go to Paul's site and give feedback.

A common thread I see, is very actionable items, as per Mark's suggestion.

Mark, Great words of wisdom! I am guilty... and plan on making some changes on my needs directly after I Post this. In a recent event posted, I actually mentioned bringing to the event two needs (other than clients).

Lara, I like your idea of re-wording "what I need" and suggest maybe re-wording it to give several choices such as the one you listed above. (((The next thing I need to move forward..., To get to the next step..., I could use..., I need help with..., In the next week, I need...)))

Thanks to all for your comments!

@Lara: I really like the idea of limiting the "What I need" feature to a timeframe. You did it with text - "What I need this week..." - but it could also be that each "What I need" has an expiration date. People can choose pre-set expiration dates like "1 week", "2 weeks", or "1 month".

That way you would know that every single Need you saw posted was active and current. No more thinking "Oh! I can help with that!" only to find they haven't updated it in 8 months, and they don't have that need any more... There are few things more frustrating than reaching out to help someone only to find they don't actually need your help...

@Mark: I like the idea of sitting people down with Biznik and giving them the basics as a way of developing leads! That is a win-win all the way around.

And, it also recognizes the fact that we all need to get business to stay in business. "Embrace your inner capitalist", as they say...

    Christian, great comments.

I think the nail has been hit on the head! I see so many benefits to it.

Also, placing a max time on the timeframe, for example a month, would not only help us all with our constant "re-evaluation" process of we really need but could help automatically delete forgotten needs.

It's amazing what positive minded people can come up with when they start "thinking out loud"

@Christian: I really like the time-sensitive idea that would remind you to update your "needs" post on a regular basis. That would be cool.

I also think that some "helpful tips" attached to certain areas of Biznik (such as the "What do you need?" section of a person's profile) would go a long way in enhancing the learning curve and help new Bizniks find their way to productivity a little more quickly and effectively.

@Lara: I like what you did with your event. We did something very similar at our recent networking luncheon to get the point across.

I moderate the luncheon and trasitioned from one segment (marketing) to another (referrals) by simply saying, "I need a dollar."

Within seconds several people had pulled out a dollar bill and offered it up. I grabbed one, looked at it and handed it back (shaking my head and mumbling... "That's not it" before taking the next dollar bill).

After going thru 3 or 4 dollar bills, I said... maybe it's a five that I need. Shortly, several five dollar bills were offered (some by folks who were first time visitors at the luncheon).

I followed the same format and very quickly progressed to a twenty dollar bill. I put it in my pocket and walked to the front of the room, where I told the group that they just experienced how fervently people (even those you've just met) WANT to give you what you need, but they can't do it if they don't know what it is.

From there we launched into a discussion about referrals. How can I refer you if I don't know what it is you need?

FTR - I returned the $20 as others began to talk about what THEY needed.
