Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion WordPress 2.8 is officially out

As of Wed., June 10th, WordPress 2.8 is out. There are some nice new features, nothing major, but worth checking out.

If you are on WordPress.com, you are updated automatically.

If you have your WordPress on your own server, when updating, remember to:

  • Backup your database and files before updating.

  • If you are using a free theme or a paid premium theme, find out if they have made it WordPress 2.8-compatible. If they haven't, try the update, but again remember to backup. If your theme has issues, upload the old files again and wait till your theme is updated before going to 2.8 again.

  • If you do need to update your theme, and you had someone customize it, talk to them before installing the updated version of your theme.

  • After updating, if your blog or website starts having problems, deactivate any plugins one by one to see if that is what's causing the issue.

  • Check your widgets and make sure they are working with the new version.

And finally, don't feel you have to update right away. Make sure you eventually do it, but you don't need to be the first one on your block!

If anyone else has suggestions or insights, please let us know.

Bob - I haven't even noticed the update, but I love WordPress and I get tons of great feedback about my blog.

Hi Dennis, yes, WordPress updates do have a way of sneaking up on you! Glad you are a fan!!

Thanks for the tips. Being new to blogging and word press we would not have thought of even checking. I do love how the blogs automatically show up on my biznik profile! Way Cool.

Hi Jim, you're welcome. With everything tech these days, seems like we are always updating one thing or another.

And, yes, having your blog on your profile is great...another reason to be a paying member.

Also, you can do the same thing on your LinkedIn profile as well.

Hearing lots of issues today on the new install. Might be worth to revisit my final thought, "don't feel you have to update right away!"

I just got a note from a colleague about her update experience and thought I would share these two comments from her...

Just a note, she is using a WooThemes

"It fixed a problem with Firefox that caused my browser to crash when adding media files to a blog posting. This was recent problem in the last two weeks. Word Press said it was Firefox's issue, so I started using IE as a workaround. The new version, however, fixed this. Yeah!"

"I noticed when installing a simple text widget to a sidebar that it now asks if I want paragraphs to automatically be formatted. Instead of having to input breaks or some other HTML code to get the right formatting, checking this box has solved those pesky problems."

It just occurs to me that the this new version may be why my photos and text are all out of alignment in my recent blog post. I went back to add paragraph breaks but it didn't help. Any thoughts?

Hey Dennis, I took a look. What exactly are you wanting to happen on the page...?

Looks like a lot of the text is just wrapped around various photos at different sizes.

  • Dennis Dilday
Posted by Dennis Dilday, Everett, Washington | Jun 17, 2009

Yeah, I didn't want that. The way it wrapped itself doesn't seem to make it easy to figure which words go with which photos, otherwise I would be fine with it.

I would size some of the photos down if you can to make them consistent with each other, insert closer to the text you want it by, then use the scaling on the image editing to get them to flow a little better for you. Hope that makes sense!

I would suggest that you have an image alignment issue. Your skin is set to be 100% of the width of the browser window but your top image applears to have a "left" alignment. The left alignment allows text to flow around the image on the right hand side when the browser window is large enough.

Set your alignment to "none" and the text will show up below the image and won't wrap around it.

Thanks Rick... that's what I get for trying to be tricky:-)

Yeah, you have to be careful with the image wrap. It works quite a bit better of smaller images, the large ones can cause havoc. Personally I still like it as being a designer, the flow is nice. But what Rick suggested is good if you want you image to align as image only.

Thank you for the heads-up Bob - I would add to your list DEACTIVATE you plug-ins! Apologies if it's been mentioned before - but that white screen of death is a killer, and can be scary, if you don't know what's going on.

There always seems to be an update right after I just finished updating from the last upgrade - can't keep up!

Thanks Christian, that is a biggies as well. Those little buggers can wreak havoc!

And you are so right, it seems like you just do one upgrade and it's on to another!

Interesting reading. Since upgrading to 2.8 I cannot edit my posts in Visual mode. I therefore cannot justify and have no space between paragraphs. Any suggestions to fix it are welcome.

    Thanks

Hi Piet, that's strange as I haven't had that problem. My initial thoughts is it may have something to do with the theme you are using. Can you post the address of your blog here?

http://theblueroof.co.za and I am using theme M. I only encountered the problem since upgrading. The real problem is that I know so little about the computer software side of it all :(

    Thanks

Thanks for the tips Bob. I look forward to the new website you are creating for me. Can't wait to have it in a Wordpress format that is easy breezy to use!

Hi Piet, my first thoughts is the theme, as I mentioned. You might just try a test and switch themes, seeing if you have the same problem.

Hi Bob, I have now tested a couple of themes - you will note that I am using a new theme - at least there are breaks between paragraphs, although no justification.

When I select the visual tab when doing a new post, all text become invisible and there is no meny to select action, ie justify.

Please suggest a theme that you know should work with 2.8 that I can try that.

    Thanks

Hi Piet, sorry, been out of town. Checked out your site and see that at least you are getting the paragraph breaks.

Not sure why the justification isn't working and why the text becomes invisible. Are you doing your posts in another software, eg, word, and then pasting in. If so, there may be some code causing the problems.

Also, I see the site was designed by someone, you may ask them and see if they know what may be causing it...

I am new to wordpress as well as biznik- looking forward to creating my blog, sounds as though you may have many great ideas. If you don't mind me staying in touch- I may have some questions for you.

    Can't wait. Thanks, Maria

Hi Maria, welcome to Biznik. Yes, feel free to post questions here. I try to keep on top of them, but the great part of Biznik and this group, is you have the community at your fingertips. Also feel free to send me a DM via Biznik at anytime.

Okay, I am one to not upgrade the minute WP puts one out. I waited, read the trials and tribulations of others who have updated, watched as bugs were worked out, and today I did the upgrade.

It went as smooth as silk and all I can say is "Whew!"
