This past spring I decided to turn a longstanding, if modest, 6-pack into an 8-pack. It took about 6 weeks, and I simply added one exercise that was moderately hard and targeted the lower abs, and deleted a less demanding more or less placeholder exercise I had been doing just to boost the overall reps in my ab workout.

About thirty years ago, after working abs for several years but not getting a 6-pack out of it, I was able to create that 6-pack in 21 days while training with some Navy Seals that had joined our ship for a ride somewhere.

Anyway, I was thinking there might be an interest amongst Biznik members in attending a workshop on ab training.

It could include (1) what would be considered normal ab strength for your age and gender (the tests to determine that could be done); (2) an overview of how people most often sabotage their ab training efforts and either injure themselves or fail to get the results they want; (3) a selection of exercises, beginner, intermediate and advanced and how to do them properly and the considerations for choice of exercise, duration, frequency, intensity and objectives, (4) and a discussion about integration: how to get the most benefit from the least amount of time training. One exercise I started doing several years ago is an advanced ab strengthening exercise, a functiional way to train a tumbling roll, a great way to move all the thoracic spinal joints, a great way to stimulate and massage the muscles along the spine, and a way to train the vestibular mechanism or righting reflexes in the ear (which relates to keeping your balance and not getting dizzy when you fall or roll). A few minutes doing this exercise gets a lot of work done in a hurry.

Anyway, I thought there might be some interest. I could run a workshop in my office here in Everett or somewhere in Seattle if there is a suitable spot. It would run about 1-2 hours and there would be a fee of probably $12.

Let me know what you think.

i'd take it altho right now i am recovering from a car accident so some exercises are more stressing on my back and neck than others so i may have to wait on this workshop for a month or so.

i quite a bit about ab workouts already and am always interested in learning more. I dated a guy for 2 years that was a personal trainer and had the limited effort with maximum results technique going too. Interested to see what your angle is.

Seattle would work best for me :)

I don't have an angle, I just have tons of ab training experience and decent abs. I also have to help people all the time deal with which exercises they should or shouldn't be doing and why, as well as how to best do whatever they want/need/can/may/or have to do.

Ab training implies strenthening mostly and there are tricks. But strength is best when it's balanced with flexibility - and flexibility via eccentric contractions is one of those leveraged approaches which multiplies benefits. I finish my ab session with a practice that has a long list of benefits and lengthens the abs to offset all the contractions... it also helps seat the humerus (upper arm bone) into it's socket helping to offset some of the forward rounded shoulder posture issues.

Amy, I think it might be a good use of your time whether did or didn't actually do any exercise... and neck issues are a significant part of what is at risk with some of the standard ab exercise recommendations currently popular.

Personally, I think the more you already know about ab training the better you would enjoy a session on the subject, for a few reasons. One is that even with decent abs and a good program sometimes there is a part of the abs you can't get to come out or do what you want. I remember when I changed one thing and went to from no vertical demarcatiion between obliques and recus, to nice sharp lines and eventually the obliques striations that can be hard to bring out.

Where and when would you like to do the training? Art T.

I would definitely be interested as I don't do close to enough core training for the sports that I do. But I would be way more interested in a session closer to Seattle rather than Everett, if that could work.

I don't care where: Seattle's fine, and if you know of a location, let me know. I can hunt one up if need be but I was thinking someone interested in doing it might have a spot. A carpeted floor would be nice but hardwork is fine - I'll be bringing a mat and anyone that attends and has a mat would be encouraged to bring it. If we think in terms of limiting it to about a dozen people, 8 RSVP and 5 or 6 show up, the space wouldn't need to be too big. Jacob Caldwell would probably let us do it at his place, but there are others.

When? A Saturday about 11 a.m. I just checked, any Saturday would work for me. Do you have any that you would prefer either in December or in January - I don't need any preparation so it can be anytime.

Hey, I realize this is an old post, but I'm curious if you guys met, if not I would be interested...I'm a personal trainer and I'm always looking for new exercises.

I am still working on a way to offer it and will be posting about that when I can. It will likely be here in Everett on a Saturday late morning or early afternoon.
