Subscribe to Hot Topics & Controversy National Sales Tax

I have been hearing a lot of talk, some pro, some con, about a national sales tax which would replace the federal income tax. How do you feel? How would it affect you? If enacted, what should the tax rate be? I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

That would be supper bad. Sales taxes are a regressive tax. Which means that poor people pay a much higher percentage of their overall income than the rich do. Talk about war on the middle class. This type of thing would wipe out the middle class. You would have poor and supper rich, nothing in between.

Its a theoretical conversation. The odds of it happening are slim and none... and you know what they say about slim.

Nothing would replace a federal income tax. Additionally, there will be cities that will oppose the national sales tax. specifically those areas that do not currently have sales tax such as Oregon or have a lower than the national average sales tax. We cannot impose a sales tax in Seattle that would equal that of California and also in different counties within the same state even due to the different levels of consumer lifestyles and cost of living.

First we would be told "oh it will only be..." Then it would steadily increase. They will never do away with the fed income tax.

In order to pay for essential services, taxes are needed. IMHO, the real problem is waste.

Waste by corruption by those who hold the strings.

As long as the Congress spends more than 70% of their time raising funds that benefit them directly and personally, as long as they are the only group in the nation that can legally take advantage of insider information, (something Martha Stewart went to jail for) and line their own pockets, we will continue to struggle to keep us from sliding backwards.
