Subscribe to Introduce your bad indie self Hello from Deborah in Lakebay, WA

Hello to everyone.

My name is Deborah, and as my title states, I am an aspiring researcher in the field of educational psychology. I'm just starting out and have more educational background than real-world experience.

I'm currently pursuing my doctorate degree in educational psychology and will start the comprehensive exam process in April.

Welcome, Deborah! I was in education in my former life (degrees in child development and educational administration and time as a school principal).

Tell me: what are you looking for from Biznik? (how can we members support you?)

    Hi Judy and Anita,

I am struggling with the fact that I have plenty of good education but very little experience in the field in which I want to work. So, I suppose I'm looking for ways to market myself in a favorable light.

I'm also considering looking for paid internships/post-docs in the field of educational research, if such things exist in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho.

Thanks for sharing your needs, Deborah. I was a bilingual teacher in Spokane School District in the 80s and most recently was a grants consultant for Renton School District. I still know a few people in that district, but quite a few people I worked with are not there anymore. If I think of any possible connections, I'll let you know.

Deborah, I was a college professor for 20+ years. Academic networking is different from business and career networking. You need to spend time publishing papers and giving presentations at academic conferences. Nothing else really matters.

If you're not doing so already, check out the Chronicle of Higher Education. They have free notification services for new job ads.

I'll be blogging about this in my career blog: www.midlifecareerstrategy.com/blog

Cathy, I am discovering that very thing! As much as I enjoy meeting and networking with other business professionals, it's not exactly what I need at this point. I receive weekly updates from the Chronicle of Higher Education, so thank you for affirming that decision.

I'll be looking for your blog! Thanks Deborah

Looks like you are already doing some positive things by joining this site, and finding ways to connect with others. I'd love to hear more about your concerns in starting up--the emotional content of what is going on for you. I'm doing a little research myself in this area. I'll be writing here and blogging about it as well. Welcome to Biznik, and good luck!
