Subscribe to Introduce your bad indie self Hope for a Freshly Graduated Freelancer

Hello all,

Can I just say how excited I am to have found biznik? I graduated from Nazareth College in May and am now spending all of my time looking for freelance writing and graphic design work (gotta pay back those loans somehow!). It's so scary to take the plunge into the working world, but having a community like this to learn from makes me feel at least a little bit better.

Any ideas for a starting newbie?

Hi Heather. Congratulations! if you're already paying attention to networking and you just started freelancing, you're going to be waaaaay ahead of most. Freelancing rocks, but it can be very isolating. So you have to make conscious choices to get connected with other business owners, as much for ideas, support, feedback and potential partners as for new clients.

There aren't many Biznik events happening in Boston - yet. So my tip for you is: start one! There are nearly 500 Biznik members in your area, so all that's needed is someone like yourself to pick a pub and put a happy hour event in the calendar to kick things off in your area. Go for it!

    Welcome, Dan

Heather, congrats on graduating and on 'the Plunge'

You have found a wonderful community here and I'm sure you'll find people will be as supportive as you are enthusiastic.

Let me know if and how I can be of help . . . I'm just down the road outside of Hartford, CT . . .

I have a colleague in Beantown whom I'll introduce you to . . . perhaps you can take Dan's idea and my introduction to Joe C and get something going in the Boston MA area!

    Best,

    Bill

Women in Digital Communications is a good place to start for finding writing gigs. Check it out on the web.

Good luck and enjoy all the "prosperi-tea" you crave!

Heather, a couple of other resources for work you might consider are mineeds.com and elance.com. There seems to be a fair demand for "journeymen" level writing.

I looked at your blog and enjoyed your articles. You might consider focusing some of your articles on information that would help prospective clients decide to work with you.

Hey, you're young, hip and your perspective has an edge. You might consider showing how that edge could work for a small business.

    Good luck.

    Hi Heather,

I just literally joined Biznik minutes ago and am also from Boston and am also a freelance writer. The only thing we may not have in common is the year we graduated college.

Perhaps we can build this Biznik Boston thing.

    Tim
