Subscribe to Introduce your bad indie self Networking is my least favorite thing

I don't know why but I really don't like to network. Online it always seems so removed and impersonal, not to mention imposing. I mean, there's a million people on that site. Why would anyone look at my little profile? In person, I find it hard just to walk up to people I don't know and just start talking.

There's something different about Biznik though. Maybe it's the colors. Actually, I think it's that in my short time cruising it, I've seen a few names I actually know from around town (though I do love the colors). In most cases it's people I know from email groups I'm a part of, but a few are actual real, live people. I think that makes it seem more personable and real in a way that makes me want to get involved.

Anyway, I'm a writer and editor focused on the environment and sustainability, but I can and will write about most anything. I have experience writing press releases, online copy and copy for print collateral as well. I have led the design of a number of high-visibility print pieces for a local non-profit organization and, in a past life, was a stage manager, so am an excellent candidate to write copy and help steer your design projects.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hello Charles. How can you possibly say that you don't like to network and then go and post a photo of yourself in front of two Hello Kitty stautues? You are just asking for people to contact you.

I grew up just right outside of New York City and I believe that has given me an aversion to crowds and I am not prone to networking either. You will love Biznik. It really is networking that doesn't suck. You can network in the middle of the night if you want because it is open 24 hours a day. It is a great group of folks...so welcome.

Hey Elizabeth, I grew up IN NYC and think you may be right. I have a vivid memory of throwing a tantrum in the midst of a 4th of July crowd when I was about 5. I hated being in the midst of all those people.

As for the picture, well, I would rather be contacted than do the contacting. Plus, I love it. I mean, giant Hello Kitties? YEAH! (That was taken in the Taipei airport where they have a bunch of different "photo stations" like that. My wife and I hit them all.)

Well the Hello Kitty ploy worked. Nice job.

NYC is all about sensory overload. Every time I am back there it takes me two days to adjust to the noise and smell and craziness. The amount of people in Beijing did not bother me as much because they were short like me and I fit in.

You should make a point of coming out to one of the smaller Biznik events that some of the folks are planning.

Welcome Charles, I can't tell you how many friends I've told,"All of a sudden, networking is my favorite part of my job besides my job!" I'm down in Portland, and while we don't have a ton of Biznik events happening (YET), we are certainly into Biznik. This site is awesome. The flexibility is great and the people on here are EVEN BETTER. You'lll love it! ---Amanda

p.s. I was in the Taipei airport a couple of years ago. I love all the photo stops!

This is my first business networking experience and I love it. When I first joined Biznik.. I couldn't see myself paying $25 to have a gold star by my name [there are tons of other benefits], but after a few day... I found myself pulling out my credit card... =P
