I love coffee, so I am always glad to see another business owner in the niche. It is also refreshing to see that there are some thriving and coffee roasters that have not been trampled by corporate bigfoots.

Did you see the news today? Coffee keeps you from going crazy. I mean, I already knew that, but I'm glad to see science catching up with me :-)

Hello Barry I will tell you it has been a challenge trying to break into new markets with the big boys controlling almost everything. We have been working hard for 15 years and it seems like it was still yesterday that we got things started. Where does the time go. One of the biggest challenges is trying to get this online coffee club going. So please feel free to join and tell others. This would be a big help.

Hey Dan thanks for that article. I wonder if that is true...I mean I've been accused of being crazy for a long time LoL. But none the less, that was an interesting article. BTW I know of that group you speak of only one per biz, we are currently a part of that group. However, I joined this network hopefully to retain better contacts and better networking to produce better results, like more coffee club members maybe or even commercial accounts.

Hi Sean, The interesting thing about small, closed groups networking together is that it defies everything we know from sociologists on the subject, who have done years of research into how social networks function. The findings of all that research, by legends like Harvard sociologist Mark Grannoveter, is that the best way to build an effective network is through what's known as "the power of weak connections." That is - it's the people you know as acquaintances who are most likely to make things happen for you (not the people who you are close to).
The same-same model does produce referrals, but I call it "breeding in captivity." The quality of the referrals is apt to diminish the longer you spend with the same people, whereas the quality of the referrals is likely to increase the longer you keep meeting new people. Don't forget, though, that "weak connections" isn't the same as "i met them online." You have to nurture connections, for them to produce on any level. Anyway, it's interesting stuff, and I'm glad you're here and let me know how it goes relative to your other business networking approach.

Hi Dan, thanks for those words. I find that I actually make more connections when I'm out speaking with total strangers. Cold calls or otherwise. I thought I would try some of these network groups to try and gain more contacts.

Wow. I always felt the same way. Interacting with strangers opens so many new doors. Great to see people talking about improving their ability to socialize. With less financial capital out there, one has to increase their social capital to make the most out of every interaction. Good luck with the online coffee club.

Social capitol is a great form of business currency, Mark, that's for sure. I like what you've got going at http://www.socialcapitalsavvy.com.

I love how coffee gets everybody talking :)
Dan - Coffee may stave off dementia, but drinking too much seems connected to hallucinations. So maybe we get to choose our crazy ;)

Hallucinations...Nonsense, I drink about 40 oz before I leave the house each morning & I'm fine, just don't pay attention to the walking trees or the talking bushes ;-0

Hey Scott I apologize I did not mean to make light of your comment, it was just that I received multiple entries from you, i.e., it posted about 6 times in a row, and I thought it a bit odd. But thank you I appreciate the fact that you are willing to pass my name on to a friend. I am also more than happy to pass your name on as well.

Hey Sean,
I don't know if you have a retail store, or anything, but Bizniks are always looking for good venues to host events.Hosting a happy hour style, meet and greet event at your location would help Event Hosts see your space, taste your products, and bring others in.
Best of luck with it, and I hope Biznik proves to be a valuable resource for you!

OK now that I'm home I can respond...Long day roasting and not enough Java drinkin'...LoL. Thank you everyone for your responses. To answer the question regarding retail locations. We do have one, however, it is a drive thru espresso establishment called "Sunshine Espresso"in the North City part of Shoreline just north of the Post Office & Safeway on 175th & 15th Ave NE. Unfortunately we don't have a place to hold a gathering otherwise I would be all over that. But feel free to stop by our espresso drive thru any time. Our staff is very good at preparing any kind of drink your heart desires & customer service that is second to none. Also we are a family business so you will not see any scantly dressed or hanging out of the clothing type of baristas. We and our staff are very proud to produce top quality at all times. And our roasting facility is just down the hill from our drive thru. Feel free to give me a buzz whenever you like. We are always eager to meet and greet; especially me. My partner is more of a bean counter (SMILE)...And me? I kiss the babies, shake the hands & pat the backs. Our goal for 2009 is to broaden our perspective & markets by taking off the blinders that we have been wearing all of these years and come out of the box and do things that our competitors do not do. I'm always open to suggestions, so feel free to visit our website at www.seattlegourmetcoffee.com and send me some feedback, good, bad or otherwise. I look forward to networking with everyone here in one form or another.
Thanks, Your friendly neighborhood coffee roaster...Sean -

Hey does anyone out there want some free coffee bags? We generally have burlap coffee bags that we either recycle for packing material, give to people that use them for gardening, or even sometimes people like to use for decorations. If you would like some bags feel free to call me at 206-417-5599 or email me at sean@seattlegourmetcoffee.com and make arrangements so you can pick them up. We always have a good supply so call and let me know.
