Subscribe to Starting a business Local hosting, anyone?

I’m looking to move my site to a local hosting provider. I know that Drizzle has been in the game for years, but I want to do some due diligence and explore my options before committing to something that can impact my business so much. Suggestions are needed and welcomed!

Have you used the search engine within biz nik to find biz nik hosting providers?

Wavenetworks.com is a local host and a biz nikker. I have not heard any feedback from customers. But you can't beat the price; $10/month or $50/year. I do not know what load or capacity comes with that. I am sure others know of some great local hosting providers in addition to that.

Yes we'd be happy to provide it. Providing hosting to Biznik members has been a great way for us to pay our bills while we ramped up the site to offer more and more features worth upgrading for, and we're happy to continue providing it to anyone who requests it. We don't advertise it any more, partly because it was too confusing for people when we had a "hosting" tab on the site - members always went there looking for info about hosting events and got confused!

    Tell us more, Dan.
    - How do you set pricing for hosting? - How does your offering compare to hosting with some of the better known solutions out there?

I would like to know more as well. My hosting company is fine, $25 a month. But they are too big for me to refer business to. They do the big guns now; they just landed a deal with National Goegraphic & have done work for the UN. So I can't say, "you should talk to my guy," to just anyone anymore.

My website it hosted with Bluehost. The company was little when I first began with them, but they have improved in every way since. Their technical support hours have increased, their services have increased, they customer service has improved. And the price have never increased from $6.95 per month when you sign up for two years!

When it comes to hosting, I'd place a much higher priority on service and support than I would where the servers were located.

One great way to do that is to either send an email or pick up the phone and call the number for support on the hosting company's website. After all, that's what you'll be doing if your hosting service goes sideways.

I am using Lunarpages. Basic plan is $6.95/month. It's good enough. I think most of us just need a basic site. Building sites by Joomla! or Drupal something.

Drizzle was fantastic, but then went through a series of changes including being bought out by another company. I left them years ago and can't really say anything about how they are now. I left because customer service and availability of the hosted services I was paying became considerably less reliable than it had been before.

I'd be curious to see what folks say who are still using Drizzle now. Anyone?

I've been using Isomedia for some time now and have been quite happy with their reliability and service. It is not as cheap as some of the hosts mentioned here, but they have been good for me.

I'm not going to promote one vendor over another, but I will promote 'go local'. With as many aspects of your business as you can, go local.

I asked my national web hosting company to make a MX record change (technobabble for some email changes) and they ended up taking me off the grid for 3 days.

I fired them and went with a local provider (newtechweb if you must ask) and have never looked back. Go local if you can...you won't be dissapointed.

Cost isn't everything. I've used earthlink, speakeasy and now with Network Solutions.

Network solutions is under 10 per month and they give you templates to use, web stats, blogging, pre-made forms, marketing advise and tools, and much more. They are reliable and most likely will not be sold or go under as a small hosting company.

I purchased the Online Submission tools and get a free consultation every 6 months to go over search engine results and such. I've had to use the support 2 - 3 times and haven't any issues with getting things fixed.

    Just my $.02

My favorite is parcom.net. I got several sites with them and their packages are really affordable starting at under $50 per year. They are local and have a fast pipe to the Internet.
