Subscribe to Starting a business Where to post a business for sale?

Hello everyone,

I am looking to sell one of my businesses and don't know where to start! I have posted on Craigslist (with some responses) but that's about it. Are there free sites out there that people actually refer to when they are looking to buy a business?

If it helps to narrow things down for you, the business is my online luxury baby and new Mom gift boutique. It is perfect for a stay-at-home mom or perhaps a grandparent to run out of their home. Perhaps there are avenues that cater to that type of business I should be looking at?

I appreciate the help!

Shelly

You can also try to set up an auction on eBay. Classified ads on business magazines might get you some attention but if you are on a tight budget, you are not recommended to take the route.

Posting here is also a good start. Your site is beautiful and the business seems like it would be a match for a lot of folks.

Not long ago I was getting the news the way I always do - while working my stomach in front of the TV, and they talked about a survey that indicated that 70% of the public wished they could start their own business.

Blog about it, post it in a few places on your profile, and keep looking. As with anything else, someone is looking for your business:-)

Wayne - Thank you for the suggestion. I will keep E-Bay in mind, although I must admit, that makes me a little nervous!!

Dennis - Thank you for the compliment on my site. I worked very hard on it. 70% of the population wished they could have their own business? Well, that certainly helps my cause, doesn't it? I will take your advice and post away! Wish me luck and thanks again!

Now that you've said that, I just realized I may know someone who is interested... I'll contact her and direct her here to read this.

One resource you might want to take a look at is WebsiteBroker.com. They have some useful information even if you do not list with them. I can also post it on another site we have for free to get some additional exposure.

    Good Luck

Shelly, I have a friend that has her own ebay business. She sells items on ebay for other people and she might be just the person you are looking for.

I think that I would be nervous to put an ad on ebay myself, especially to sell such an upscale business, but having a professional would make me feel safer and I would know that I was getting the right price. If you would like her information let me know.

    Thank you Penny,

I still just don't think that E-Bay is the way to go. There are too many things that can go wrong. Even with a professional, such as your friend, things can happen. Not to mention the fees I would have to pay not only to E-Bay, but the E-Bay seller as well. Thank you so much for the offer - really.

Shelly: www.bizbuysell.com is an online listing of all businesses for sale. Most are listed by brokers and I'm not sure how much it costs. It's an interesting site and I assume it's still active. Try it out!

    Hi Lorena,

I wish it were 'a little late' - but no such luck! Two deals have fallen through due to financing. (Grr . . .)

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I am off to check them out now.

    Cheers!

Hi Shelly, Not sure where you are with the sale now and you might check out www.cwahm.com - this is a website for Chrisitan Work at Home Moms and I know Jill Hart the owner will have some great resources for you.

    Good luck

www.bizben.com is one of most active sites that business brokers use. It costs money though.

Thanks Tammy and James. Both options I will check out. Selling a company these days is rough!

Hello Shelly, I'm a new member of Biznik and am in few weeks time launching a website for people who wish to sell their business. If you are still "open for business" then I would be glad to post your ad on my site (no charge). You would be my fist customer!

try flippa.com. I know there is a fee for listing. But you get good offers. I sold one of my business there for a good chunk. You can either run it auction style where you have the lowest amount you would accept set, or create a buy now rate.

    Hope this helps.
