Subscribe to The Biznik Community Online events in the Biznik Calendar

For the past 5+ years, Biznik has NOT circulated online events to the Main Calendar; this week we intentionally circulated two.

Just to catch you up to speed:

One of the COOL things about the Biznik Events and Articles page is that they are curated. This means that anyone who is at the Pro or ProVIP level can publish an article or an event on their Biznik profile. While this may be a benefit for the member, it might not be to the Biznik community - as this is a community of business owners looking to network, or for resources to help them grow or run their business.

While it is definitely a benefit for the member to publish anything he or she wants to, there might not be the same benefit to the Biznik community - as this is a community of business owners looking to network, or for resources to help them grow or run their business.

So if a ProVIP member publishes an article on how to fry the perfect egg - our editors are not going to circulate it; likewise if they publish an event that is not business related in nature.

In 2005, the events calendar was specifically designed to facilitate face to face networking style events. Not workshops or online events.

Over the years, members wanted to use the platform to host educational workshops, and in some instances, charge for them.

We were able to implement the changes to the platform to facilitate those types of events - and many members host, exclusively, workshops, and in some cases charge for them.

Last week, for the first time, we intentionally circulated some educational, online events to the main calendar.

WHY on Earth did we do that?

We felt like it was time to test the feasibility and success of presenting a sample of a few online events hosted by a select group of vetted members.

The team would like the resultant goal of circulated online events to be a preliminary discussion point for the online event as well as a venue for post discussion after the event.

We are dealing with the circulation of online events very deliberately, and are only able to extend this privilege to members we are familiar with at this time.

I would love to hear your thoughts and observations on this trial period.

    Hi Andrew,

Its nice to see that Biznik is expanding into other interesting areas. I understand the need for testing the market carefully and taking the kinks out of a new system.

I was unaware that Biznik had an additional category, beyond ProVip members who pay your top membership fee – this category called 'members we are familiar with' – I thought Biznik was an online community that provided benefits and services based on the category of membership and the relevant fee paid? This special 'clique' thing is disturbing.

    Hey Nadir -

Not sure what you are referring to about a clique.

There is no membership level beyond ProVIP.

And the curation of articles and events is based purely on the quality of content and whether or not it relates to business.

That is the point I was trying to make in this post.

Sorry if I did a bad job of it!

He was quoting you Matt "We are dealing with the circulation of online events very deliberately, and are only able to extend this privilege to members we are familiar with at this time."

Not that I have an issue with it. I think he misunderstood.

    Hi Matt,

I was referring to circulation of online events very deliberately, and are only able to extend this privilege to members we are familiar with at this time. This came across to me as if you are making this available to only those members that you have some special familiarity with - thus the use of clique.

BTW - my apologies for addressing my initial comment to Andrew, rather than you, Matt.

    My apologies.

    I understand your concern now.

The barrier to entry is so low on hosting an online event, and that the sales pitch in an online event could easily exceed our 95/5 principle.

In order for me to circulate an event that is high quality and low sales pitch, I need to know who they are and ensure that the event that I circulate will not leave the Biznik member feeling like they wasted their time.

For example, the two online events we have circulated are from members in Vancouver and San Francisco.

While I have never met either of the members face to face, we have had multiple phone conversations over the past few months, I familiarized myself with their businesses, and I have sat in on several of their previous online events.

The Perfect Pitch, hosted by Patt Leger on April 28.

Stop avoiding your follow-up, hosted by Biznik Ambassador, Joshua Zerkel on May 2.

I have RSVP'd for both of them, and will RSVP for any online event we circulate.

Hey Matt, I think this is great you are testing the waters on this. And the fact that you need to keep an eye on what webinars show up on the calendar makes a lot of sense. With as many that are done out there, it could become overwhelming : )

I'm sure most of us agree, as with so many webinars, their sales pitch goes well beyond the 5%. In fact I can't tell you how many I have found to be nothing but a huge sales pitch.

Looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to share this experience for The Perfect Pitch with the Biznik community.

We have been working very hard and I know that this is something that any business will be able get glean from.

Great work and I am honored to be included in the pilot and looking forward to seeing more online events from the community!

Yes. I noticed my teleseminar did not get the same attention as my in person workshop. This is great!

So many of us are going virtual to save time and money and reach a broader audience. It's a shame not to have the events showcased the same way as the in person, local ones.

    DeBorah -

The circulation and promotion of virtual events is not an easy one.

When the Events Calendar was created, it was done so to promote local face to face events that indie business owners could attend with the assurance that there would be no MLM's or pushy salespeople.

The benefit of course, is that all who RSVP have a profile on Biznik, where there is a high degree of accountability.

How (and if) we extend promotional tools necessary to educate the member base on virtual events is still a big question mark.

But, I am cooking up some ideas.

It sounds interesting. Is this similar to an online video that prerecorded? Or will this all be live?

Bob, if it's a sales pitch webinar, it's easy to turn it the webinar off. :)

Laura, it is easy to turn it off, but if I have taken the time to tune in and the promo for the webinar is misleading, it still is irritating : )

I am all for informative, interactive and educational teleseminars. I have attended a few some where basically just listening to someone talk - it was still live because we could ask questions via a text box. Others were completely interactive - like a class only remote I enjoyed that most.

It sounds like some guidance on the platform would also help. :)

Some of the IRS webinars/ online classes are run in a very dry manner. Other's not so much. I still chuckle about the one where they showed a taxpayer was hiding under a desk to avoid an agent. :)

Laura, having edited a few Power Point presentations for your industry do they ever get less dry? No pictures all text I was bored and I was just editing the content. :)

A good accounting webinar has jokes about every 15 minutes. A dense tax or accounting webinar is guaranteed to put most people to sleep.

Reading tax code even puts the speaker to sleep.

I would suggest some graphics or some examples that are entertaining to liven it up a bit.

The AICPA online CPE training courses makes people push buttons at random slides, has short quizzes, and popup windows.

Quickbooks also has online training for the ProAdvisors. Again random buttons to advance the training, live shots of speakers, moveable graphics.

If all they had was text, I think they lost out on a great opportunity to insert some graphics, put in cartoon, etc.

Hello everyone. I thought I would chime in about my event The Perfect Pitch tomorrow.

Most of our broadcaster will be LIVE. That is what is so special about our event!

We do have a pre-recorded video at 1pm but ALL broadcasters have been asked to provide insights for businesses and NOT sell their own companies.

We redirect users who are interested in learning more about the individual broadcasters and their companies to the profile pages or channel descriptions where the user can click links if they want to.

I am counting on many people dropping in and out of the different broadcasts and if you happen to miss something - you'll be able to watch the re-broadcasts later on.

We are trying to find new ways to create engagement with online conferences, as this is our first we will have many improvements on the next one.

Our broadcasters will be checking in from Vancouver, British Columbia Toronto, Ontario New York, New York Wadhurst, East Sussex, UK Melbourne, Australia

Our broadcasters are encouraged to stay live after their segment to answer questions from the chat feature in each channel page.

Can't wait and oh yeah... we just hit 10,000 visits on our site today (an all time best~)

Matt, as you probably know, I'm a proponent of sharing online events via BizNik as most of my events are virtual.

I like the idea of making it available to your higher paying clients first and to filter the ones you circulate to make sure they will speak to a majority of your members. Kudos for wanting this to be a high quality portal...its why I decided to invest as a Pro member. =-)

Let me know if I can help in any way.

    Great conversation.

Matt, is it not possible to simply establish a criteria, just like your 5/95 rule and let everyone know what that criteria is – rather than looking at each one, subjectively?

This is great - I'm looking forward to webinars & Teleseminars being promoted - both from a presenter but also as an attendee. I'm sure they're several that I would have attending & found value in if had had known about them but unless I stumbled on the promotion on someone's profile they're a missed opportunity. And I like your concern about keeping the info/sales ration in check.

In no way do I want to suggest that in person events are going anywhere - on the contrary, I am making an effort to bring more value to them by not mixing up virtual events in the same calendar.

Rather to find an elegant solution for both helping members hosting virtual events promote them to the Biznik audience that wants to know about them.
