Racing For A Cause : Attention Alberta Professionals !! This project was inspired by successful charitable initiatives in Australia, New Zealand and Europe where groups were formed to LEASE Racehorses to share in the thrills of Thoroughbred Racing. By donating portions of the horse's winnings to Charitable, Medical and Social Causes, these groups not only had FUN , but also made a positive difference to society by improving the well-being of others. This Alberta based project has some unique ideas, blending the legal and tax guidelines for Owners/Lesses of Racehorses ( Under Section 31 of the Canadian Income Tax Guide for Hobby Farmers) and the extra individual option to donate part of the horse's winnings to a charitable cause of each individual's choice for additional individual tax benefits . Racing for a Cause 2011 is creating 10% percentage ownerships for Alberta Professionals for one year ( 2011) commitment for just $ 2500. The only additional expense will be $ 50. when you apply and receive an Alberta Owners License through Horse Racing Alberta. The horse chosen for this 2011 Racing For A Cause Project is a filly , Crimson Deed, who has a championship pedigree and will race as a 3 year old in the 2011 Alberta racing season. Her mother was Alberta Champion 3 year old filly Crimson Hue , and her father is Canadian Champion Racing legend ALYDEED, who won the Queen's Plate as a 3 year old by 11 1/2 lengths at Woodbine { Alydeed was also 2nd in the Triple Crown Preakness race as a 3 year old}. If you are an Alberta resident professional , are new to racing, you will be able to be a 10% part owner/lessee in this project 2011 RACING FOR A CAUSE for an investment of $ 2500. Act early, by contacting this filly's successful Alberta breeder/ owner Dr. Brenda E. Abbey for a chance to be part of this professional group. This outstanding filly has championship blood and she has the potential to follow in her parents' winning hoofprints!!

I am eagerly anticipating the release of the new movie Secretartiat in October and am inspired by the story of the horse as well as the passion and determination that his owner had. She battled against non believers in a male dominated thoroughbred industry and has been a role model for women who also love Thoroughbred ownership and the DREAM of raising and racing the big horse. For RACING FOR A CAUSE we have the Big DREAM for Crimson Deed as a 3 year old racing in Alberta.

Crimson Deed is progressing in her training to be a racehorse for RACING FOR A CAUSE in her 3 year old year for 2011 at Northlands Park in Edmonton Alberta. The 2010 Alberta racing season has ended , but Crimson Deed continues to be an excellent student as she trains this fall at Peaceful Valley Stable near Didsbury. All the people involved in her training program recognize her intelligence, athletic ability and her desire to do things right. Having a great mind is essential for a great racehorse and Crimson Deed continues to show how sensible she is as well as how much HEART she has !!! Alberta professionals who are interested in joining the 2011 Racing For A Cause project are invited to contact Dr. Brenda E. Abbey and make arrangements to tour the breeding farm and see Crimson Deed in training. A great part of this project is the chance to get up close and personal with this magnificient filly and also have a chance to see her sire- the great Champion ALYDEED who is also at Peaceful Valley Stable too.

I am guessing that little Crimson Deed is the horse that is in the photo with you. I remember Alydeed...he has to be from the Alydar line..I'll have to look him up. Good blood lines anyway!

    Looks like a good program.

    Hi Timothy,

Yes , the photo is Crimson Deed and me when she was orphaned . It is wonderful that you remember Alydeed, he had a great race career and he has outstanding bloodlines . Alydar was his mother's sire and his father was from Nijinsky II, who was a son of the legendary Northern Dancer. Alydeed is known for passing his strengths to his daughters, he sired Primaly who was Canadian champion 2 year old filly. Crimson Deed's mother was an Alberta champion and came from Seattle Slew bloodlines on her sire's side. Thank you for your positive comment about the Racing For A Cause project I have started here in Alberta. I have photos of Crimson Hue prior to a race, as well as her son- Crimson's Adagio { who is now a therapy horse } on my own website- there is a link to that site on my Biznik home page.

Wow! How can you beat Alydar and Northern Dancer!

Did little Crimson have a nurse mare or did you end up taking her mom's place?

Crimson looks very alert and attentive (smart horse!).

Best Wishes and Best of Luck!

    Hi again,

In answer to your question about Crimson Deed's orphan experience, she did not have a nurse mare .Crimson Hue died when Crimson Deed was 3 months old so this special filly did have an early attachment experience with her mother and she got lots of attention from many people at the breeding farm. We fed her milk supplement pellets and she went out everyday to the pasture with other mares and foals. At that age , the foals are starting to interact with each other so she had companionship. One mare let Crimson Deed hang out with her foal and didn't chase her away . When all the foals were weaned , she was in the same field with 20 other weanlings and that situation remained until some of the yearlings were sold the next summer . She loved to run with the other young horses and they entertained themselves with imaginary races. The love of running is in their blood!!

I have seen some amazing pasture races. I had an Arabian colt that loved to race the Thoroughbreds. He was able to continue running for a long enough time to defeat the track racehorses.

The sanctioned track races are quite tame compared to the wild brush-jumping races in the pastures that sometimes involved deer, dogs and the goose! The goose would fly low over the horses backs because she couldn't run fast enough.

In the aftermath of the Breeder's Cup Classic , I am reminded of the many lessons all of us can gain from the story of the career of the great mare Zenyatta. Because she captivated so many people and created a sentimental following , Zenyatta has set the stage for a greater fan base and more interest in the actual horse in the sport of horse racing. The lesson of PATIENCE and appreciating the HEART of the Horse will be the legacy of the Zenyatta story . When many owners and trainers in the racing industry are rushing thoroughbreds to race at 2 , Zenyatta was almost 4 when she raced for the first time. She then went on to win a historic 19 consecutive races and lost the 20 th race { the Breeder's Cup Classic with a purse of $ 5 million }against males by only inches. As an owner and breeder , I practise what I preach and demonstrated PATIENCE in the early years with my champion mare Crimson Hue . I am doing the same with her daughter Crimson Deed , who will come to the race track as a 3 year old to race for the 2011 Alberta project RACING for a CAUSE. My dream is that this special filly will also create a fan following for this 2011 PROJECT!!!

I don't race two-year-olds...it's tough when most tracks stipulate that a horse must post a win by the end of his/her fifth year...Zenyatta is a wonderful example of a great athlete with great management.

In January 2011 , Racing For A Cause horse -Crimson Deed will start her race conditioning in an indoor arena at Peaceful Valley Stable near Didsbury. Many of my successful racehorses have started their racing season preparation this way since the footing is always soft and we work on cardio doing 2 miles a day - without a rider. Alberta professionals who are interested in joining this Project and in finding out the tax and charity benefits of RACING FOR A CAUSE are asked to contact Dr. Brenda E. Abbey to arrange a visit to the farm and see her training before Crimson Deed ships in to her trainer at Northlands Park in Edmonton.

There is exciting news in the Thoroughbred Racing World. Zenyatta has received the honours she deserved, she will make the racing history pages for a long time . She was named 2010 HORSE OF THE YEAR as well as Champion Older Mare in the Eclipse Awards voting this week, there is talk that she is the horse of the DECADE !!!. Zenyatta captured the hearts of so many people and she created a sentimental fan following because of her story. We are now in the 2011 season for Racing for a Cause horse - Crimson Deed's fitness conditioning preparation . Even though her 3 year old birthday is February 21 , all North American Thoroughbreds turn one year older on January 1 of each year. There is an advantage for a horse born earlier in the year rather than in late spring.

    Do you want to see 2011 Racing For A Cause horse Crimson Deed doing Cardio training in March 2011 ? If so , contact Dr. Brenda E. Abbey so that arrangements can be made for you to visit and to see her in the indoor arena at Peaceful Valley Stable near Didsbury. Crimson Deed will be training at the farm where there is excellent footing for her in the arena. Even when the weather is frigid , she will not miss training because we will be indoors. Her champion mother Crimson Hue found this spring farm arena conditioning VERY SUCCESSFUL !!. Crimson Hue developed great fitness and endurance , she was a spring Stakes Race winner in her first start of her 4 year old year { no prep race , just the solid foundation of arena conditioning going in both directions , with no rider to interfere with her movement and breathing !!}

Crimson Deed continues her racing season training for her debut and will soon be moving south of Calgary to a first class Thoroughbred Training facility that has a private racetrack. Having a private racetrack to train on will give Crimson Deed her final preparation experience of being able to gallop in company before she moves to her trainer at the racetrack in Northlands Park, Edmonton Alberta . Contact Dr. Brenda E. Abbey to make arrangements to see Crimson Deed training on the private racetrack at the Training facility in early June 2011. Anyone interested in getting more information about joining Racing For A Cause 2011 Alberta Project is also invited to come and see training.

    Mother's Day 2012,

I had an emotional and rewarding experience at Northlands Park racetrack on Sunday morning. I was able to be trackside and watch Crimson Deed do her FIRST GATE workout with a jockey. As she shot out of the gate and continued to run easily for the workout , she was 10 lengths ahead of the other horses. I had tears in my eyes since she looked and ran like her champion mother Crimson Hue did, she won her maiden race by 10 1/2 lengths.Crimson Deed is an orphan since her mother died when she was 3 months old. I felt and thought that Crimson Hue's spirit was running with her daughter on the racetrack on Mother's Day.

On June 30 , 2012 Crimson Deed , the 2012 Racing for a Cause racehorse was a longshot winner paying $ 57.80 for a $2. bet . She won a spectacular and thrilling race as she closed from 6th position , passing her rivals in the homestretch for her first lifetime win in only her 2nd start. As her owner and breeder , I am donating some of her purse winnings to a charitable cause - Brain Cancer Research. This is in honour of her Champion mother's groom Ricky Hansen from Edmonton who passed away of brain cancer last year. This is exactly why Racing for a Cause , Alberta Project 2012 was created - to make a positive difference and the orphan Crimson Deed helped make that happen !! Crimson Deed will continue to be a sentimental fan favourite at Northlands - just like her Stakes Winning Alberta champion mother , Crimson Hue. Contact her owner , Dr. Brenda E. Abbey for a chance to meet Crimson Deed on the backstretch.

For the 2013 Racing for a Cause Alberta project , a new racehorse star is on the horizon. Avonly is a precocious, fast 2 year old Alberta Bred filly from a black type producing female family. Avonly's sire is the same as Crimson Deed's , also the legendary ALYDEED , who is known as a successful sire of racing fillies and future broodmares.Primaly made $ 378,770 and was one of Alydeed's famous daughters . Primaly was Soverign award winning Canadian CHAMPION filly as a 2 year old too. Avonly, as the 2013 Racing for a Cause racehorse will follow the same training program as Crimson Deed. Avonly's foundation learning has been happening at Peaceful Valley stable, the historic breeding farm where all of Dr. Brenda E. Abbey's racehorses have been born and raised. In May, 2013 Avonly will have her racing kindergarten experience at the elite private racetrack facility of Bar None Ranches. During the summer Avonly will move to Northlands Park- Alberta " A" class racetrack and high win % trainer Sharon Bott will finish the last stages of race preparations. Since Avonly has a fantastic pedigree for speed and stamina , the goal for her will be the $ 50,000 2 year old filly race on Alberta Breeder's Fall Classic day near the end of September, 2013.

If you are an Alberta resident and are interested in being part of the SPORT of KINGs - contact owner/ breeder Dr. Brenda E. Abbey.
