I am so glad you spoke up! What is the difference between regular belly dancing Bd tribal belly dancing Bd mandala dancing? Where do you perform? Dance is "art" and my hope is that we can all benefit from each other - just knowing what you do could perhaps fit a specific event, we could perhaps put together a Biznik 'Artists in the Droves' event featuring all the different forms of art - what do you think of that idea? I think it could be amazing! I'm going to put some thought into this, love to have your feedback!

Marni, I love the way you think. A collaborative art night would be a blast, I am sure! And a great way to meet everyone and see what we all create! What a great idea. What about some future First Thursday, since you have a spot down in the area? Or do you usually have it booked out far in advance for First Thursday?

Dance is kinda hard to describe in words (like any art), but the gist is that most people have an image of bellydance as the glitzy, beads n' sequins, flirty Hollywood image of bellydance, right? Tribal bellydance is an American slant on bellydance which has a more "chick power" kind of energy--an expression of joy and strength and community. The costume is eclectic, blending elements from many different global cultures into a very lush and exotic earthy look. It is also a group improvisational dance, so it looks choreographed, but it is actually a totally unique performance being made up right there and then before your eyes!

Our next public performance will be at Folklife on Saturday night at the International Dance Stage, along with lots of other fusion bellydancers, if anyone would like to check it out live! inFusion Tribal Bellydance is my performance troupe, my business of teaching classes and workshops, and creating costumes, is Mandala Tribal/Seattle Tribal (bit of an identity crisis lately ;) The STYLE is American Tribal Style Bellydance, shortened to ATS or simply Tribal.

Whew! There's your mini lesson! LOL

Sharon, this looks incredible! I couldn't get the videos to work (probably my computer), but the pictures look amazing! I was at the "Goddess Festival" in Boise last year (I did music) and had SO much fun watching all the dance troups! I just might have to drop on on a level 1 class, I've been wanting to try something like that.

What day/time are you at Folklife?

Yes, I am a performing artist, a singer-songwriter. I was also feeling a bit lonely... actually, I started a Seattle Musicians and Performers groups that is just for songwriters, singers, instrumentalists, also dancers, comedians... (Ok, you may be lonely there, too, because it's almost all musicians at this point!)

It would be awesome to have a networking event with art, and then invite people to stay around while we make a little noise or shake some booty! (Then again, we'll have to be careful with the fine art!)

You can hear some songs from my last cd at http://www.myspace.com/katephillipsmusic . I'm starting to mix a mostly live cd, very different (stripped down) from what's posted right now (very produced). The first song up there was inspired by an ecstatic dance in Hawaii.

Hi Sharon. Tell me more about you and your artistic passions as a performer? Love to hear about your form of Bellydance. The InterPlay community has many belly dancers and belly dancer-want-to bes. There is an InterPlay trip to Morocco currently on the boards. Marni encouraged me to log on and post and I find you this morning. I am a partner in play=peace. CathyAnn Beaty, in MN and I, on South Whidbey Island, are taking InterPlay performance, workshops, and my writing on the road. I am currently creating a multi-layered performance around the topic of Women's Money Stories. Do you know about InterPlay? You can explore my profile and http://interplay.org/seattle for more information about events in the Northwest and internationally.

    Hi Sharon,

I'm a performing artist, too. So, you're not alone. I'm an actress, voice over artist and singer.
Great website for your group, although I couldn't get the video to play. But my PC can be cranky about playing those.

Hi! I've seen Sharon's troupe in person many times, and they always are fun, original, and dare to take risks. Some of them were nice enough to model for my costume books.

A group of bellydancers did a rally downtown yesterday: "Shake it up for Single Payer" (health care) This little bitty rally got some media coverage, and we would like to do the same in the BIG Seattle pro-Universal Health Care march on May 3O.

This is an example of artists using their talents to influence others. I hope some more join us, so the dancers' & artists' contingent is a colorful part of the march - if indeed you all support that cause.

Kate, I think your idea about an artistic networking event is SUPER. I would help you work on that one.

We need an event planner! I am SO not a logistics person, but I can rally musicians if we find the right venue and date. How big is Marni's studio?
