Subscribe to Seattle Musicians and Performers - Discussion What's your talent?

So if we are going to collaborate and make beautiful music together, we should probably know what each other brings to the party, right?

OK.... if you insist... I'll go first...

My name is Christian Jacobsen, and I have been playing bass guitar for way more than 20 years. Funk, experimental, rock... I just love to play original material. (I don't really play cover tunes.)

I also am a fine rhythm guitarist, a basic level ukulele player, and I picked up an electric violin recently in my passion to delve deeper into "olde tyme" music, or what I like to call "hobo music".

Starting in June my creative itch should be picking up again (since my Circus will be disbanding), and I'll be looking for other people who want to explore parlor / hobo / old tyme music. (If there are no amplifiers involved, then I'm interested.)

Geez, it helps if the group leader is awake! Just saw your post, Christian. Great thread to start, Thanks!

In a few weeks we'll kick off officially with a song circle, probably in Seattle on a Tuesday night... need to secure the venue. So stay tuned for that. In the meantime, just invite any musician friends so we'll have someone to invite to the song circle!

So what's my talent? I am a singer, songwriter, and I play piano. Piano is not my claim to fame, I'm more known for my lyrics, songs, and a somewhat distinctive voice. People have compared my music to that of Sarah MacLachlan, Shawn Colvin, or Vonda Shepherd. Somewhere between pop, folk, rock, country and maybe a little blues, but more in-between than any one of those.

I play mostly originals (with a few re-vamped covers), but mostly, I have a talent for turning any song into a piano ballad. Someday I will put out a cd of covers called, "Smells Like Teen Spirit and other Piano Ballads."

I play solo and also (usually) with my good friend Bryan Rust, who is also in this group.

Oh and I'm an awesome coach! But that doesn't so much relate to performing...

    Next?

I'm purely a vocalist - only play enough piano to get by for teaching myself or others. My favorite type of singing is classic art songs, in Italian, French, German, English, Yiddish and occasionally Spanish. I love this genre because it's very intimate and gives you a lot of opportunity for character development. But I also sing spiritual solos for $$, and opera arias - since that's my training. I also love new music and ethnic music. Basically, anything edgy and interesting.

Other interests and work include singing/ storytelling for puppet shows and writing music previews.

I'm an actress, voice over artist and classical singer. I like almost any type of music, though. My voice is most suited to opera, art song and legit musical theatre. I also do singing telegrams and comic roasting.

    Hi folks,

I am a singer, songwriter, guitar player and am usually accompanied by my friend, Matteus Vaga who plays electric and acoustic cello. We have a band together called Blue Star Creeper and we play out about once a month. (This Tuesday 4/14 we are at the High Dive in Fremont at 9 PM). Matteus and I performed on the center camp stage at Burning Man last year.

I'm always looking to connect with other musicians, artists and creative people in the community. I enjoy hosting and being invited to living room concerts, salons, or whatever "beat happening" may be percolating out there.

Past that, I am also a yoga instructor and I have sound engineering / studio recording skills as well.

Keep me posted on any events or collaborations!

    Thanks, Kelly

to earn a living i've mainly been teaching singing (ADORE doing that!) mostly private lessons but also workshops on special topics, such as "Taming the Wild Nervebeast". Also play piano and celtic harp (which i also teach). have written music, mostly incidental music for theater pieces -- basically, when someone needs music for some situation, as opposed to having a particular internal muse!

i think we all as musicians and artists have a lot to offer to our society, our culture; music and all the arts are not just entertainment, not just another "industry" though they can be that too -- they are part of what creates community and enrich the imagination and the emotional health of everyone in the culture. so though i have no particular agenda for how i might contribute to this biznik subgroup, i'm eager to support you all and see what happens!

Wow! very talented people on here! I'm from Chicago but I'll be moving to Seattle in June so I'm trying to get to know the Seattle music scene and all the people that are a part of it. My primary instrument is piano but I also play bass, guitar, harmonium, violin, and just started messin around with the mandolin. I'm moving actually with my two bands. One is punk, the other is 60's garage rock( think mc5 and the stooges). All the music we write is original and I also have my solo singer/songwriter stuff and have my friends play along with me. Can't wait to finally get there!

    Hi, all. What talent!

I have been singing jazz at the local jams at Tula's and Egan's Ballard Jam House for a long time and have had a few of my own shows. I am just on the verge of "gigging" in a real way. I am recording my first "demo" which should be done in a couple of weeks.

Just in the last six months or so I have been writing songs in swing and ballad forms and in the process learning music theory in more depth. It's a wonderful musical world out there and I am looking forward to meeting you all in person.

In my other life I am a therapist.

Teaching kids and adults to play by ear and by music, but also to make music in group, with no experience and even some fear about it. My students are not embarrassed or ever stand out. Group drumming, simple simple dances, singing in ensemble (rounds, easy stuff), and formal group adult piano lessons. I teach folks to compose songs, with very little they need to learn, or you could call it "arranging" the compositions of others. Take Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or a familiar song, then create intros, interludes, endings, between the song. Turn chords into arpeggios all over the keyboard, alterations of the melody for in between parts, etc.

Group music making at my studio, with a wide variety of percussion instruments, barred instruments (xylophone, etc), drums, etc. is often the most relaxing and time flies!

So I teach but I facilitate fun times together, all ages.
