Subscribe to Social Media for Small Businesses - Discussion When you don’t have anything to say

The other day I sat staring at my status update for Twitter for a little while, feeling like I had nothing to say, and conversely also feeling like I should say something. I eventually gave up, with a slight niggling feeling of guilt, because I hadn’t posted anything. It’s not that I even expected that anyone would care about what I had written, so much as I felt like it was important I say something in order to be visible to people (whether they cared or not). We hear from so many social media experts that you have to spend 10 to 20 hours on social media each at week, at least, and that you have to be active in interacting with people through these mediums. It’s a sin if you’re on social media and you’re not updating your status regularly.

I know that feeling all too well. I'm an independent insurance agent. Sometimes when I can't think of anything to say, I use parts of the customer brocheres that I get from the Insurance company as tweets or short blogs. It helps me to get that information out to people that I don't meet face to face and saves time and expenses on mailings. Many times I get requests for more information.

The best way to be sure you are using social media effectively is to create a strategy for your business messages. What message do you want to get accross, who is your audience. This means plan your tweets in advance (if you have an relevent tweet that day then use that one and push the others back). I would suggest 30 days in advance. This will help you when you dont have anything to tweet and make sure you are consistant.

I plan some of my tweets, but not all of them. There's something to be said for spontaneity and producing a message that isn't so carefully crafted. People want authenticity in their engagement on social media. So while I stick with a definite theme and plan some of my tweets, I also like to mix it up in the moment.

I'm so glad I'm not alone :). I always feel when I'm on twitter I need to say something, but at time I don't really have anything to say. I do know what you mean by being visable though, especially on twitter.
