Event description

Biznik cofounders (and the SHINE director) are in town from Seattle for this special event. You don't want to miss it.

SHINE: The Entrepreneur's Journey is a 26-minute short film produced by Biznik that reveals the elation, fears, dreams, and tears that accompany anyone on the entrepreneur's path. Through intimate interviews with entrepreneurs, experts, educators and celebrated researchers, the journey of entrepreneurship unfolds revealing the challenges, pitfalls, rewards and successes of self employment.

SHINE encourages you to ask yourself what kind of entrepreneur you are, and inspires you to think about what kind of entrepreneur you want to be.

Woven throughout the stories are pearls of wisdom that inspire conversation and discussion.

"Figuring out you're an entrepreneur -- it's a lot like coming out of the closet." - Karrie Kohlhaas, Thoughtshot Consulting
"My father loaned me $10,000, and I ended up borrowing $10,000 from a bank, and that’s how it all started.” - Bruce Livingstone, Founder iStockphoto
"We should have a class within the entrepreneurship program on how to fail. Because chances are you’re going to fail the first time.” - Connie Bourassa-Shaw, Director Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, University of Washington Foster School of Business

View the film in a social venue. Then break into small groups to discuss what it means to be an entrepreneur.

Share, conspire and network with fellow entrepreneurs who know what it means to go solo.

We provide the questions. You come prepared to get closer to your business and to your business community.

“The best part of being an entrepreneur is that I get to determine when I work. As long as it’s 24hrs a day”
Can you relate?

Not sure why it shows that zero people attended today :) Great to see all of you and thanks to Souk! Kaya

I was really inspired by the film and conversations. For some reason what was most inspiring to me was hearing that Failure = Learning (what works and what doesn't work). I can never hear that lesson too much. And it helps to know that people fail and keep on going in some way. In my group we talked about Breakdowns leading to Breakthroughs, and how the Chinese character for Transformation depicts a man stumbling and discovering himself on a whole new path.

One other thing our group talked about was the importance (as our own boss) of giving ourselves a day OFF.

I knew I could watch Shine online, but when I learned that I could watch it with other entrepreneurs I purposely waited. So glad I did.

First of all, if you haven't experience Souk--that in itself was a great learning experience. Lara and Dan--feel like I am on the ground floor since I met you my first time out.

Until I experienced it, couldn't really grasp the Biznik concept--now I got it. Not only did I learned, I had fun---two of the things I look for when I select what face-to-face networking events I go to.

Wendy, good to hear you heard us loud and clear about taking a day off. We're holding you that! For those of you who weren't there a day off means no emails/no telephone calls.

Try it--you will like it and your creativity will soar.

    Happy week everyone.

Kathy- thanks for your comments. Like you, I chose to wait to watch it with the group and glad I did. I also love the Biznik concept and attempt to bring that locally in my monthly group, Get Out of YOur Office and Connect. I hope you will join us!

Wendy- I took off two days last week and went to Breitenbush. As there is no internet or phone service there it is the perfect place to get away from your business. I came back so refreshed and more inspired. So- I agree!

    Good Morning,

I received a message that I was a no show. I assume its because some automated software said I was a no show as I see that there were zero attendees.

I was there and enjoyed talking with other entrepreneurs, the presentation and the movie.

Sorry for the 'no-show' messages that went out this morning. I thought I had recorded attendance on my iPad and didn't realize that it hadn't registered. The attendees should be marked now.

So great to meet all of you. I look forward to coming back down again soon.

Thanks Lara and Dan for coming down to Portland and bringing that film with you. What an incredible story came out of that.

I found all the stories deeply touching and inspiring! I got a lot of inspiration and ideas from listening to their words.

In fact, I just posted my newest article Are You Needy Or Greedy? and some of the thoughts were inspired by the film SHINE!

What a treat to see the documentary and to meet both new people and Bizniks familiar until then only as an online presence. The film and question sheet sparked many thoughts for me. The conversation in the small group had much interest as well, with contributions from people across a wide range of experience, personal style and goals. Thanks, everybody!
