Introductions
We should introduce ourselves and what we do, and suggest some challenges we are having.
I am an electrologist and esthetician in Kirkland. My challenge last year was that I had to move my business TWICE in less than a year! Now my challenge is to find and retain new clients in my new location which has NO walk-by traffic (a totally private office), in this sad economy we are experiencing. I could use general advice from other women who have been in business for a while on how to deal with the ups & downs of biz ownership, and could just use some encouragement. :-)
Thanks!

Cassandra--Do you have a mailing list or email list? How do you keep contact with your clients?
For walk-by traffic, you could get with some other business owners and have a business tradeshow at each others offices each week--rotating between offices and then cross market. Look for the places where lots of people gather. Host a giveaway in those businesses or a social hour to showcase your services.
And...flyers for intro services work too.

Hi Diana, thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I have a mailing list and send out a monthly newsletter packed with skincare information and product and treatment info and specials.
I have tons of flyers and postcards that I distribute and post where ever I go.
I have a $5 Spa Happy Hour, where you can get a choice of about 5 different mini services for only $5 each. It's a great pick-me-up for after a hard day at work.
I love the idea of a rotating tradeshow, that's a really cool idea and right up my alley! I hadn't thought of that. Thanks! I have been trying to reach out and meet my fellow local businesses, but I'm sure you know how tough that can be. Sometimes people just aren't interested. But I'm not one to give up. Your suggestion sparked some ideas for me though, so thank you for that.
Too bad we aren't closer to each other!

Hello, all! I am so grateful for a way to connect with a small group of women and learn about your offerings.
That is one of the things I have found most powerful in building my service - connecting with smaller groups of folks and learning about what they need. I find those connections not only fulfilling and inspiring, they are also turning into wonderful referral sources!
My service is walking with horses (similar to swimming with dolphins) which helps people and organizations reconnect with their inner wisdom and create beautiful futures that flow from what they hold most dear.
I am building relationships with local organizations interested in transforming into the new leadership paradigm of honoring collaboration, service and the power with, rather than power over model. I am open to suggestions and resources!
I look forward to meeting each of you!

Hello fellow warriors!
My name is Chris Oates & I'm a Komerican. Komerican? What is Komerican you're wondering... It just means an American with Korean heritage:)
I started a small, very small business a week ago. It's called komericanECO.com I design 100% certified organic t shirts & organic/recycled totes with Korean/English scripts with designs. I know, there are 100,000 new t shirts businesses sprung out there& I for one, thought that I went into a mid life crisis or something. Then, my Irish husband said, if I don't cherish who or what I am, who would, except him? It sounds crazy but yes, my Irish husband encouraged me to start a Korean-American Eco Friendly Wear, komericanECo.com!
Nice meeting you all & please check out my website komericanECO.com! Any words of advice or kind "you need to stop now, hon" advices, ALL welcome:)

Hello Ladies,
Cassandra, thanks for getting us started on the introductions! Great website, by the way--catchy & easy to navigate. I'm just in the process of getting mine made, so am really scrutinizing others.
I am a residential Realtor with Lake & Company in Seattle. I've been in the business four years & love it because the work is interresting & fun & usually I can manage it around my family schedule. I'm a single mom of three teenagers, so that would have to be my biggest challenge--trying to juggle it all--getting my brain to focus some days is highly challanging! (Nina, I think I need your help!! I will be spending some time checking out your website.)
Cheers! ~Karissa -

Hi Everyone,
Where to start...I'm a Virtual Assistant specializing in bookkeeping, marketing implementation, auto-messaging and shopping cart support and so much more. I've been doing this for over 2 years now and love every minute. Before I started my business I worked for several "Big" companies in administrative and bookkeeping roles and though I liked the work, I couldn't take the environment.
I'm a single mother and finding employers that understand the extra requirements of that was virtually impossible. It didn't help that my son was born with a heart defect and needed extra attention. (he's fine now and growing like mad.)
I find it encouraging that as women we don't look at problems as impossible, but rather as jumping off points for better possibilities. Women have the internal drive to succeed hardwired into us. Its part of being female and your body being wired to deal with family stress and change.
If your interested in seeing more of what I do you can check out my website at: www.seattleva.net.
Best to everyone! Kristi

Hi Ladies -
I am the owner of JPromotions Advertising Specialties - we create solutions to help build identity and image utilizing low cost promotional advertising. I am a promotional product consultant - the pens, mugs, shirts to help promote your business or organization.
I have been in this industry for 9 years and started my own business 3 years ago and loving every minute! I work from home so I can be there for my kids.
My industry is really down during this slow economy - it's unfortunate that when times get tough, people/businesses cut out the most important thing - advertising, so any referrals and business would be greatly appreciated.
Nice to meet all of you and if I can be of assistance to help promote your business, please contact me and check out my website: www.jpromotionsonline.com
Best wishes to all!

So wonderful to meet all of you! I just signed up at Biznik and was so happy to find this group. I think it is so important for women to support each other. It is also inspiring to hear stories from women who are at all stages in their careers.

I am currently in the process of developing my website which will support projects that impact children, provide a space for people to collaborate and raise awareness, and promote inter-sectoral partnerships.
I am looking forward to exchanging ideas and getting to know all of you.

Hello busy women!
Thanks, Diana, for the invite. It took me a while to get here, but I finally did it. lol
Currently, I can honestly say that I'm not sure what I am. Site administrator, SEO specialist, copywriter, programmer and blog developer - none of it falls under a specific category.
I'm in KC, MO, have two kids, work from home, and the greatest challenge at this time is balancing work and family. Of course, I'm pretty sure that will be a constant challenge.
The second greatest challenge is lack of marketing skills. Copywriting is all well and good, I can write copy that sells, but actual advertising is a huge package I can't wrap my mind around. I know it isn't as easy as "hey, this is what I do, now order!", but what comes from that is "duh...."
I really look forward to being part of this group, and meeting all of you!

What a great group of women!
Well, as for me, I'm a color & design creative. I've been in the graphic design & illustration field for about 18 years. Then I added some interior design & color consulting about 5 years ago, by the request of a client. Now it's about a third of my business.
I had a 6 year gap in my business where I was living in WA, DC and staying home with my 2 children. I've spent the past 5 years rebuilding my business in the Pacific NW.
I love what I do. I would say my biggest challenge is competing against the big guys in the design industry. But I've started blogging and I network as often as I can. I find my best business connections come from the relationships I've made through networking and personal relationships with women.
I'm looking forward to being a part of this group!

Hello all,
I joined this group a while ago but hadn't taken to the time to visit and look around much until now. It's great to read about all the different women and businesses represented here. So I guess it's my turn...
MySource Promotions provides promotional merchandise for businesses and organizations of all size. I have to give a shout out to Judith above, who is in the same field :) Promotional products are a great way to market your business in an inexpensive and targeted way, but it's true that a down economy tends to cause people to pull back in this area. I am sticking with it though because I love working from home and helping people find customized and fun ways to spread their message. Please keep me in mind for your next trade show, special event or marketing campaign.
If you are in the Tacoma area, come walk and talk with me on June 26th!

I am blown away and inspired by all the women here in this group. It's a bit intimidating to actually post this right now, but I hope everyone does well with their business in this unforgiving economy. As for myself, I am a web developer/designer, video editor, animator, and writer (creative writing, short stories, poetry). I've been thinking about starting my own business, but I have so many individual projects that I am working on for various people that I wouldn't know what to call it or specialize in (though, I am getting a bit burned out on the web design). I've worked on a range of web projects from Real Estate, Magazine, Corporate, Educational and Social Networking. My latest personal project I'm having trouble getting off the ground - (Where's My Lesbian - social networking site for the glbt community with an emphasis on networking and expression.)
In any case, I look forward to checking in with this community often to look at inspiration that I can achieve many goals.
