Subscribe to WordPress Chatter - Discussion What's your take...WordPress & Squarespace?

Personally, I haven't had the time or interest to take Squarespace for a spin because I'm a bit of a WordPress wonk:o) But I've been toying with the idea of tossing up a new site just to get a feel for SP's capabilities.

How about you? Have you migrated your blog to SP? Are you considering it? What would make you switch? What would keep you from switching?

Happy Friday! Shawn

Hi Shawn, nor have I had a look at SP. Awhile back I met with someone and they mentioned that early on they were frustrated with WP, so ended up moving to Squarespace. But at that time they were reconsidering going back to WP. If I had the time, would love to explore it a little more.

Hope someone that uses it can chime in here. I will send a note out to the group and see if anyone uses it.

    thanks for posting!

I haven't heard of SP...I'd be curious to hear more about it, as I'm planning on diving into a program (WP at this point) later this summer/fall to get a biz blog up and running.

Then there's TypePad...should we throw that into the mix? Does anyone know about that blog site?

Hi Paul, yes I do know Typepad. In fact our marketing blog, the first one we did is on Typepad. When we first started getting into blogging, we read the small book Blog Wild and he suggested Typepad.

In hindsight, it would have been great doing it in WP, but making the transfer, risk of losing RSS subscribers, etc, have put that thought on hold.

So Typepad, unlike WP, they do not have a free version. You will pay a minimum of $4.95 per month. It does have a wide variety of widgets and a choice of themes, but certainly not as much as WP does if you host you through your own server.

Also, customization of the blog is more limited, but they do have a very intuitive backend as far as setting font size, color, creating menus, etc. But again, you just don't find the variety of features as in WP. In fact, several times Judy or I have seen a great feature on a blog, only to find we cannot use it on our Typepad blog.

I know that several of the bigtime bloggers use Typepad, including Seth Godin.

I could go on and on, but DM me if you have any other questions about Typepad. Still my vote is for WP!

I use SquareSpace and find it flexible, easy and as a non-webby guy, ideal. The real deal maker for me has been their help desk, very personal, very effective and on the money.

WordPress frightened me and I also thought the templates limiting (is that only the free version). Although SquareSpace templates are nothing to write home about, I did find their simplicity works for me.

I also tried Typepad for a while, but too bloggy and not flexible enough compared....

It has always struck me as odd to hear that WP intimidates so many people. I guess since I've worked with it since nearly the beginning the complexity has melted away. That said, as a platform it's becoming more and more powerful which I can see how it might be overwhelming. In the end I think it really comes down to preference.

Terry - would be interested in hearing more about your experience after you've been on for a bit and grow your site. On the surface it seems like a fairly simplistic tool but I've been hearing a lot of positives about it's growth potential.

Sort of peaked my own interest, I might just have to find a spare minute to take a closer look under the hood.
