What’s the best way to recharge your business? Take a vacation.

As business owners, we often get stuck in the same old routines of running our businesses. We move from position to position, working non-stop making sure things get done. After all, most business owners have to wear a lot of hats to get all of the work done.

But after a while things begin to get monotonous. And the best way to get back on track is by taking a vacation.

Here are 10 things you should do on your next vacation.

10. Relax. Don’t check email twice a day and carry that cell phone with you at all times. The only way to rejuvenate is to completely get away from it all.

9. Try something new. Wherever you go these days you’ll find the standard shops, stores and restaurants. Why not take a chance and try out that small restaurant on the beach? You may be in for a pleasant surprise. While you’re there, get some tips to use in your own business.

8. Find something motivating to bring home. I always find one thing that I can bring back and put on my desk that will allow me to relive my vacation experience anytime I need a quick escape. It may be a special frame for a photograph, or a vase for my favorite flowers. It’s nice to bring that feeling to life at any time.

7. Don’t plan every moment of your trip. Sometimes the best memories (and the most inspirational ideas) can come from the least planned times.

6. Buy a special journal just for your trip. Some of my best ideas have come from my down time. Instead of writing your ideas on napkins, or worse – forgetting them all together, put them in a safe place for when you get back to your office.

5. Learn something new. Chances are you’ll find something new during your time away. Learn from others, especially those companies that are new to you or you’re unfamiliar with.

4. Watch how other companies are using today’s technology. During my recent trip to Disney World, I went to a Monsters Inc show at the Magic Kingdom. As we stood in line, televisions and signs prompted us to text message jokes to use during the show. Once in the show, the “cartoon” figures actually use your jokes, and converse directly with the audience. What an amazing use of technology.

3. Ask questions. It’s incredible what you can get if you just ask. Maybe a behind-the-scenes tour, or a special performance. You never know until you ask.

2. Bring along a good book. Whether you have a spare few minutes each night, or an hour by the pool, it’s always good to catch up on reading.

1. Gather brochures, maps, cards and other ideas along the way. Once a small business owner, always a small business owner. I admit I love looking at other creative ideas. As I find interesting ideas, I save them for future use. Maybe they’ll help you create your own brochure. Or maybe you can use the ideas to blog about, or even create an article.

Once you’re home and back in the office, it’s easy to use your new ideas to help move your business forward. Maybe we should all plan a vacation several times a year.
