Sometimes you pay extra becuase the registrar provides a fantastic piece of software for developing your website, comprabable to dreamweaver 8, and sometimes the fee inlcudes fantastic customer service based in the USA. I woudl pay extra for both but that is me. If they dont provide any of the above and still want the $35 a year that is bloody outrageous for sure.
Do you have a domain name?
I recently had a client renew their domain name with their registrar, and their registrar wanted to charge her $35.00 / year. This same service is available at GoDaddy.com for about $8.90 / year! So I called to find out why the fee was so high and they told me that was their set price. I asked how long it would take to move to a new registrar and they asked which registrar I was thinking about moving to. I told them GoDaddy.com and they asked, is this because of the pricing? I told them yes and they magically reduced my $35.00 / year renewal to $8.90 / year. Are you kidding me?? I felt like I was visiting a foreign country where people swindle eachother left and right just trying to get the most money regardless of what their product or service is worth.
Also be careful where you register your domain name, some web development companies will try to hold on to your domain even if you decide to move some day and they'll make you pay crazy fees for a transfer. Your domain name should be registered to your business or at least with someone you can trust.
I am a partner in HostBarracks.com, check it out.. $6 / month hosting with daily backups available. Oh yeah, make sure you are backing up your information, a website would be a terrible thing to lose. ;)

Either way, a company that is just as comfortable charging $35 and $8.90 for the same service is a little over embellishing wouldn't you say? But for the record they don't have some fantastic piece of software for developing, they just have a user-friendly control panel to manage your domains and hosting accounts, but who doesn't?
Highway robbery I tell you! ;)
