Building Trust Online

If you are an entrepreneur your entire client base is built on trust. Building trust is a normal reaction to interactions between two people. In face to face interactions a large part of determining if we trust the other person is based on eye contact and body language. In an online situation, body language is missing, so how can we size up the other person to determine their honesty? How do you know that you can actually trust them?

Good business relationships online are built by establishing trust through personal interaction via email, instant messaging, and other socially contextual meetings. Social tools such as blogs, wikis, and forums when used professionally provide individuals a format for building trust through personal interaction. Article marketing can in some cases establish the writer's reputation as a expert or at least a knowledgeable person in that particular profession or business.

One of the first impressions potential customers and clients have of you and your business is your website or blog's landing page. It must be relevant, professional, and easily navigated. It needs to represent your tone and your voice through honest and accurate content. The language you use throughout must be appropriate for the climate of the site and to the customer base. You must walk the walk and talk the talk without appearing to be glib, over the top, or unprofessional.

Endorsements and testimonials that are appropriate and real show customers you are trusted and respected by others. Case studies also demonstrate for your potential customers how you have helped other customers with your book, products, or services. Use supporting endorsements and testimonials that highlight your real forte and that clearly demonstrate the results your company provides clients.

Focus your efforts on building for long term connections with your clients. Quick sales are one-time, impersonal, and do not often result in repeat business. Show your potential customers the features of your product/service through the benefits they will receive. Clients want to know how you will benefit them directly. Speaking to their needs helps build trust quickly.

Consider having an "about us" page that discloses email, telephone, and company address so customers realize there are real people behind the company. Include photos as that reiterates there are real people behind the website.
Common sense and hard work will go far to establish trust.

Learn what makes a site trustworthy and then implement the changes on your site. When people trust you they do business with you on a regular basis and they tell your friends about the wonderful service they get there too.

Well said. In today's market where we seem to be more "hi-tech" than "Hi-touch" it is important to maintain first impressions on the web.

Thanks, Mike. I agree whole heartedly. Staying people oriented can be difficult in this web world we work in.
