Great points, Shannon. It's a reminder that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It's amazing how many people will make outrageous claims, knowing that a tiny percentage will believe them, and throw money at them, and hope for the best. But that's no recipe for building a sustainable business, from either side of the equation.
What Not to Do When Building a Website or Blog
Building a sustainable website or blog requires some thought and planning. Trust is built with customers and clients if you are honest, present quality content, and offer readers a sense of legitimacy. Real trust is created when a personal relationship is demonstrated by real people. People buy from real people.
If you want to create a relationship with your client or reading audience based on trust you must avoid the following practices:
* Outrageous Promises and Claims
* Demean Your Competitors
* Publish Poorly Written and Edited Content
Most customers can spot a scam from miles away. When websites make claims that make promises or claims that are too good to be true...then it usually is too good to be true! Promises to get rich quick are both unprofessional and unethical. Ultimately, your online business will not succeed if your efforts are in this vain. Trust is built on honesty and integrity.
Never demean your competitors by using negative or insulting language. It is very unprofessional to put down your rivals. Consider using objective comparison tactics to compare and contrast your company's products/services' features and benefits to those of your competitors.
Creating trust is a slow painstaking process. Taking the high road is well worth the effort when creating long lasting relationships with your clients.

I 'liken' marketing and promotion to what my Daddy always says, "Don't let your bird dog mouth overrun your chihuahua behind!" So....say what you mean and mean what you say to your clients and customers. I try to work by those rules. I can only trust that others do too!
