What Allan does
I do Rolfing. I work with people to take the kinks out of their bodies so they have better alignment, balance, and posture; so they feel better, move better, and perform better. I do this by figuring out where the sources of strains are in a person's body that keep them out of whack, and work the tissues strategically to bring them back into balance. It's a holistic approach. People come to me for a whole spectrum of reasons including stress, chronic or acute pain, specific injury, or postural overhaul. And I also see a lot of people who realize that their discomforts are reflections of their entire structure being under duress. That's where Rolfing's whole-body approach really pays off and gives lasting results.
What Allan does best
I've done a lot of training in two approaches developed by osteopaths that dovetail beautifully with Rolfing: cranial and visceral manipulation. While Rolfing concentrates on the body strains caused by the connective tissues of the skeleton, these modalities focus on the strains originating with the structures of the skull and organs, which can likewise create far-reaching imbalances. I listen to and connect with my clients when I work with them, and draw on this larger body of knowledge to tailor sessions using what I've found to be a more comprehensive approach in helping them address their concerns and achieve their goals.
What does Allan need?
My objective is to produce results. Once we accomplish my clients' goals, I encourage them to go out and live with what we've done, and maybe return in the future for more fine-tuning. That said, my practice has a constant turnover of clientele, so I'm always looking for new people walking in the door! I'm also interested in meeting folks and broadening my referral network...and maybe finding a new real estate agent (for down the road).
Education
I got my B.A. at Oberlin College a while back, with majors in Geology and Japanese Studies. A few hats later, I completed the Rolfing Training at the Rolf Institute in Boulder (1988). I did the Advanced Training a couple of times (1991, 1999), as well as auditing it once again and doing a Post-Advanced Training (1994). I've taken many more Rolfing classes, but I'd rather not bore you.
For additional insight and a change of pace, for the last 10 years I've studied Visceral Manipulation with Didier Prat, DO, and I'm wrapping up a five-year training at the Canadian College of Osteopathy this May (the coursework, at least!). I'll be ready for a big vacation and a brew when that's done!!
Experience
I've been in private practice for nearly 20 years. During that time I've taught both Rolfing trainings at the Rolf Institute? in Boulder and my own continuing education classes, and have privately mentored other Rolfers. I've also sponsored and assisted teaching Visceral Manipulation classes. In addition, I do occasional technical editing and translation of osteopathic and bodywork books for a local specialty publisher. For fun, I've been a certified snowboard instructor, and practiced and taught Aikido for thirty years. And in previous lives, I shot pictures of Debbie Harry and Joey Ramone's mock-wedding and James Earl Ray's recapture, rebuilt a Volkswagen engine, dodged traffic all over Tokyo on a bicycle, climbed Ayer's Rock (Uluru), met sea dragons face-to-face...I could go on and on.
