Abecedary Press, my secondary business, is a full service, award-winning boutique publishing house. We have produced books for national and regional distribution. I provide publishing consultations to those interested in determining whether self-publishing, on-demand publishing or full service publishing is right for their project.

  I'm writing this three months after taking Beth's course on value added pricing in February 2008.

  I wanted to see if it had an impact on my one-on-one QuickBooks and Quicken set up, check up, and training business where I come to people's workplaces so they don't have to fight traffic to attend a class.

  It did. This was one of the few paid Biznik events that I have attended. I got more than I paid for. Way more.

  First, I ended up rewriting many of my ads on Craig's List and my web site to talk more about the value and cost savings that I would bring to a client as well as being able to sleep better.

  Second, I increased my fees by about a third (to start) to reflect the savings I could deliver to my clients.

  I based my new rates by calculating that my fee should be equal to at least a ten percent savings or a reduction in costs (such as it took me an hour to fix a problem that would have taken them ten and we bill out about the same.)

  Third, I implemented a minimum three hour rule for my house calls. This has resulted in my getting higher quality clients who understand that quality does not come cheap and that I have a right to make a profit like them.

  Ironically, I have found that most new clients need at least three hours and this allows me to fix most of their problems instead of having them look at their watch.

  Fourth, I started offering unlimited QuickBooks training and support for one year for one employee in one company at the rate of four times my minimum fee.

  As a result, the difference between January (a normal month) and March and April is that I am making 50% more profit and working the same number of hours.

  So the next time Beth offers this course, if you are in a service based industry, you would be very wise to invest your time and money to take the seminar.
