  • A Preview of WordPress 2.8

This was taken from The Blog Herald

Some Administration Panel Redesigns in WordPress 2.8: While WordPress committed to no changes in the WordPress Administration Panels interface, there will be a few minor tweaks.

WordPress 2.8 News: The final stages of development, testing, and patching is underway for the release of WordPress 2.8. The latest news on the next version of WordPress includes:

Has-Patch Marathon Results: The results of the Has-Patch Marathon for WordPress 2.8 are in and 44 patches were committed to the core, with 20 new ones added, with a total of 102 tickets closed. Expect the release candidate for WordPress 2.8 to be out soon.

Widgets Redesigned Finally: The long awaited redesign of the WordPress Widgets are in the Appearance panel is done and undergoing testing. Some visual improvements are needed, but it is close to done. Widgets are now able to be added to WordPress by extending WP_Widget, which allows multiple instances of the same WordPress Widget in the sidebar. They note that all existing Widgets must be converted to this new system as previous API functions will be removed in WordPress 2.9.

Plugin Management Panel Updated: The Plugins Management Panel has been updated to match the other Administration Panels and now includes status filters for All, Active, Recently Active, Inactive, and Update Available, as well as a search and option for setting the number of Plugins to show per page.

New Favorite Actions: The new Favorite Actions feature is a drop down menu that allows you to set your most redundant actions on the Administration Panels. It recognizes what page you are viewing on the Administration Panels and helps you to navigate faster through them.

  • The Power of Hosting An Event

I have hosted and attended several Biznik events and am always amazed at the connections made and relationships built. But here is a short story to tell you even more about the Power of Events.

Recently I hosted a discussion group I have started called WordPress Chatter in a coffee house in Renton. There were 5 of us and the conversation was great. Afterwards as I was leaving and passing one of the customers at another table, he stopped me and asked "You do websites, right?" Of course I said yes, and then he proceeded to tell me that he needed a website and could he please have my card. Wow! Obviously he had overheard our conversation.

Do you have a story that happened to you at an event? Would love to have you share it.

I just have to add, thank you to Biznik for creating this community!

  • Promote a group member

Okay, I looked through the discussions and believe I didn't see an answer to this. By each member of the group, there is a "Promote" and a "Remove". (I know this is only an administrator function). The obvious one is the Remove. What happens when you click the promote. Was hesitant to push it without knowing....kind of like not knowing what that red button might do in a submarine!

  • One pre-event and one post-event tip

I'm sure we all have great tips to share. So I will start with a couple -- and not get carried away with a long list.

When people leave a comment on your event, before it happens, whether it's to say they cannot make it this time, or that they are looking forward to it, as the event host go in and reply to them. It will make them feel that you care!

And though Biznik does send out an auto "thanks for attending" do this yourself as a host. And don't be afraid to ask for comments on your event page. Most people are willing to do this and people do go into past events to see what is said about them.

  • WordPress Dashboard

Well, we are at version 2.7.1 and hear that 2.8 update will probably be in April. Have you found the most recent version's dashboard intuitive and easy to use. Any particular challenges?

I really like the auto updates, with as often as they come around!

  • Is Your Photo Part of Your Brand?

Does your photo brand you? Is it part of the bigger "branding picture"? With social media sites, we are finding "our faces" out there more and more. I am using my photo more and more— not just on the web, but in print as well. Although I'm not a big fan of my own mug, it works for us.

But having been active on Biznik for over a year now, I find some interesting observations regarding the photos here. Some questions and thoughts:

Does your photo truly represent who you are? I believe some photos are meant to give a person a certain personality online vs. in person. There are some people who appear to be "in your face" or "aggressive" in their photo, but once you meet them in person, they are the total opposite. Or maybe you come across with an attitude or something not quite positive, but then in person you are the most likable individual in the world.

Is your photo consistent? If you change it a lot, why? Again, some of us change our photos very infrequently, while others do it quite often. The one problem I have with this is when I scanning over the event pages, I often look for faces I know and recognize. When the photo has changed, often I breeze right by it.

Of course I realize that maybe someone chooses to change it from a snapshot to a professional headshot, which makes sense. But changing it continually, does that help your brand?

We hear so much about "authenticity" and "transparency" and I'm a big proponent of that. So, does your photo say who you are?

I feel mine does. Although I don't carry around my large coffee mug with me, I am who you see. How do you feel about this issue?

  • How Far Does Your Biznik World Go

How far beyond your community do you keep up with Biznik?

In our profiles we get to choose our community, eg. Seattle and then set how many miles we are willing to go out to keep up on events, members, etc. I normally choose 100 miles, but often go to 250 mile to see what Portland is doing.

What's your magic number? And for any specific reason?

  • Video Vs. Print

Video vs. print. We have all seen more and more video being used on the web. It is said over the next five years, video will even be more prominent.

I like both. And I believe sometimes one works better over the other. Myself, for entertainment, I read a heck of a lot of books, and enjoy good movies. For education, I still prefer a book over a video.

When it comes to a lot of things, I still prefer print. For example, a blog. When I can read a post, I can scan over it and pick out what's important to me. In a video blog, I cannot scan. I must watch the entire thing. Same with most videos. And I have warily sat through many hoping for some gem that never came...so they can be real time wasters.

Both are great marketing tools, and the more options you offer, the better.

Where do you see video going in the future and for your own business? Do you have a preference, or enjoy a good balance?

  • Another Reason To Show Up At Biznik Events

There have been several discussions over the months on getting people to commit once they have signed up for an event. No show and cancellations happen all the time. And this post is not intended to get that conversation going again.

But, having done several events, think of this next time you RSVP.

SOMEONE MAY BE COMING JUST TO MEET YOU!

Case in point. At a recent event, while an individual was introducing herself, she also made a point to connect with someone she had specifically came to meet about possible work, and wanted they to talk with this person afterwards.

So, remember, when someone sees you going to an event, their main reason my be to connect with you, or possibly even hire you. Just food for thought.

  • Odd Shaped Biz Cards. Do They Really Stand Out?

We all get stacks of business cards when we go to networking events. And I'm sure everyone has their own "method of madness" in organizing them. Whether you pick and choose, promising ones go in a nice business card holder, or possibly you scan them in. Or you might wrap a rubber band around them.

I believe the first transition away from the traditional card was to make them vertical instead of horizontal. But card holders were still popular and that forced one to turn their head at a 90-degree to read it.

Whatever the case, what do you think about odd-sized business cards? There are Moo Cards out there, cards half the traditional size. And I've found larger ones, the size of playing cards, or maybe perfectly square.

    So I'm asking you...

What is the strangest shape of card you have ever received?

Do those cards really stand out, do they really make a difference?

If you have a card that isn't standard size, how has it worked for you?
