  • I budget education and networking together, since I see both as part of expanding my horizons and they fit well together. I have something to learn from everyone.

I tend to be a self-teacher on many topics, however, so I tend to go more heavily on materials and conference registrations than on seminars or classes.

I also take HEAVY advantage of free (or nearly free) educational opportunities in my community (learning foreign languages, technology user groups, interest-focused non-profits with educational programs, etc).

  • Get .com as your primary, for sure.

Then buy .net and .org and use those to redirect to your primary. If you use gandi.net (or any other good registrar) you can modify you A and CNAME DNS records to point to different sub-domains for development and testing purposes as well (I see you're a programmer).

  • Thanks Andrew! One of the servers hadn't heard of Biznik (I suspect she was new) but I filled her in. Viva Liberty!

  • YES!!! Emma Goldman is often quoted as having said "If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution". Many believe this was a paraphrase from the following passage in her book, "Living My live" (1931):

"At the dances I was one of the most untiring and gayest. One evening a cousin of Sasha, a young boy, took me aside. With a grave face, as if he were about to announce the death of a dear comrade, he whispered to me that it did not behoove an agitator to dance. Certainly not with such reckless abandon, anyway. It was undignified for one who was on the way to become a force in the anarchist movement. My frivolity would only hurt the Cause.

I grew furious at the impudent interference of the boy. I told him to mind his own business. I was tired of having the Cause constantly thrown into my face. I did not believe that a Cause which stood for a beautiful ideal, for anarchism, for release and freedom from convention and prejudice, should demand the denial of life and joy.

I insisted that our Cause could not expect me to become a nun and that the movement would not be turned into a cloister. If it meant that, I did not want it. I want freedom, the right to self-expression, everybody's right to beautiful, radiant things.

Anarchism meant that to me, and I would live it in spite of the whole world — prisons, persecution, everything. Yes, even in spite of the condemnation of my own closest comrades I would live my beautiful ideal."

  • :) An event is definitely coming up, stay tuned!

I think that in terms of what the pledge would mean, it's a defined set of discrete commitments to sustainable practices. I like the [much] larger idea of figuring out how to give credit on an ongoing basis, and this effort would initially focus on something basic to get folks on board the party boat.

Then we raise the bar! (perhaps at the bar, it's a party boat after all).

  • I would add - from a conversation Michael and I were having just the other day - that the Bay Area is a major convergence point for telcos. If you need very high bandwidth or low latency, then it's better down there than here.

Many Seattle telco providers send you through their gateways in San Fran, because Seattle is actually a stub node on a surprising number of networks.

Most gateways out of here are only OC-3 or smaller.

  • The old logins cached my password on the browser when I accepted a cookie for it, but the new login window (at least on FF 2.0.0.4 Mac) won't do it, and doesn't save the "keep me logged in" setting.

I have to redo it every time... Feature request.

  • Here's another. I just noticed that CJ's Domain Name post is living under "About Biznik", along with a bunch of others that I don't recall seeing there before.

I think some posts got coded for the wrong groups somehow (??).

Whew, I hope all of this is being helpful. I don't want you to feel like these are all high priorities! :)

  • First thing that comes to mind is, "whazzat mean???"

Second is, "Who already has it?"

I find the coolest, most authentic names that I see folks using have derived from something both deeply personal, related to place (geographically or culturally) and associated in some way with their fundamental approach towards their clientel.

And clever. Everybody likes clever, but don't make it so clever nobody knows what it means...

  • Formatting of summary teaser for posts in BizTalk isn't consistent with the actual formatting of the post. For example, properly-bolded words appear as '* *[word] **' in the teaser.

OK, I can't get it to format right in this post because I don't know how to make a litteral pair of asterisks without it turning into a bold command (so, how do we do that?)

Check out my Sustainability Pledge post for an example.

  • Hey Nancy, it appears that the res on your pic on your website is 72ppi. When I look at it in Photoshop and take it down to 100 wide, it does get pixilated.

If you just crop it to 100x100, it'll look fine (as on your website).

Or use a higher resolution photo to begin with, that way it'll re-size it down better automagically.

Is anyone else seeing weird little video artifacts in the comment boxes when you're writing a new comment?

  • Mapping to zip code works, mapping to city works.

Mapping to Street address seems to not be working, though I'm using a PO Box. It's mapping to the wrong zip code (98101) , which is basically the default for Seattle (I presume).

When I change it to a regular street address, it maps everything correctly, including - surprisingly - finding "West Seattle" for the city (since I don't list "Seattle").

So, I'm guessing that Google has a problem when it's sent a PO Box for a street address, and just tries to generally get the metro area @ that point.

  • Trying to send a message as a reply, clicking on "Send Message", but I don't get the little sweeping time circle, just no response. Reload, retype (argh), try again, and it worked.

This seems to happen when the "send message" button ends up on the right side of the typing window instead of on the bottom where (I presume) it belongs.

    Intermittent issue.

  • I liked the way that when I did invites before it would keep the customized text that I had written up. With 2.0 it no longer does that, so I have to copy and paste from elsewhere if I want to save a baseline invite rap.

If it were possible to do that again, that'd be nice. Save the most recent customized text as the baseline for the next message, so I can put that in my own words more easily and quickly.
