  • Job creation and the solopreneur

If you are a job creator, it goes without saying that you have a massive beneficial impact on your community and society at large. It's not often that you see someone enter into business for the purpose of creating jobs for others: the goal is usually income/profit, and jobs may be created as a side effect, a means to an end. To a few, the good of job creation is more like a "necessary evil" factor for making profits.

This why I was so impressed to see the story of a young man who had invented an alternative to wheat-based playdough using a patented soy-based mixture: his single-minded focus on creating jobs in his hometown, Bloomfield, IN was inspiring.

The product, Soy-yer Dough, is for kids with wheat allergies, and/or celiac disease, apparently a sizeable market. Sold out of his home, he has moved 19,000 units. Although not a frequent TV watcher, I caught the segment the ABC show "The Shark Tank" that featured this innovator.

In negotiations with the sharks (apparently a term for people risking their own money in exchange for equity), his initial rebuffs were all about bringing jobs to his community. The investors were eager to get the patent for licensing his idea to Play-Do, which had made an offer on his patent for $500,000, before he even went into the Shark Tank. He didn't budge on yielding control of the business until he was assured that part of the negotiations could include bringing jobs back to Bloomfield, and they also persuaded him that with the capital they could raise with a licensing deal, he could do even more for employment. It was downright heartwarming to watch.... after the deal was made, the inventor, Sawyer Sparks, addressed the viewers of his hometown: "This is for you, Bloomfield." Provincial? I think not.

When I was a kid, I don't recall ever thinking in terms of creating jobs for others. I wish I had. Like lots of other kids, my career fantasies ran the gamut from fame & fortune, to adventure, to authoring... Think about what he was willing to do: it's every bit as much "giving back to community" as a corporate gift for a new theater.

Walk the halls of a business school and ask people what they want to do, what they want as a legacy. I think, as probably do you, that not terribly many would speak passionately about adding to the payroll. True, many of them would think about growing their business and impacting their city, but you don't hear "I want to hire, hire and hire some more" every day, do you?

A good business is usually the creation of an innovative individual, who can grow it and might end up opening its doors to new employees, even if that's the last thing they wanted! More people able to feed their families, build or buy houses, buy furnishings, art, books, games, classes, trade in their community. The exchange of value leading to even more value. That scary unemployment number affects us all, even if we're not in the ranks of the laid-off. Thus, the job creator affects us all too... and they seem to be relatively rare creatures.

Not long ago I read an interview with a successful entrepreneur, a really nice person, whose work has become famous and whose site receives massive traffic. If he decided to, he could monetize the notoriety, scale the work, and create dozens of jobs. However, asked about growing the business, he replied, point blank: "We would have to hire people to grow the company, and we don't want to hire." Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it shows that success in creating a market for a good product, does not necessarily equal jobs: it takes an individual's will to create them, in addition to the quality of their business offering. And the unemployment number will not go down without individuals making such a decision.

Wouldn't it be nice to hear kids talk about growing up to be job creators? Don't more people talk about getting a job, finding a job, landing a job, than creating a job? I think owning your own business is a huge step in that direction: you've created a "job," in a sense, for yourself. Can we engender the willpower to invest our capital and energy to grow beyond solo entrepreneurship?

We're often asked to donate our money or time, or donate services or product-in-kind to support a cause. This is often called 'giving back to the community.' I can't think of an individual who gives more "back" to the community than the person who sets his or her mind to expand opportunities for others through direct employment. Every job created is an achievement, a victory. (What if disadvantaged inner city kids thought about creating a business, about hiring their friends, before thinking about finding a job?)

People like Sawyer Sparks give me hope. We need a lot more like him.

  • If your company, non-profit, or group has Twitter users, here's a free tool...

I found this via a friend on Twitter, and was inspired to post it after seeing this discussion (http://biznik.com/forums/where-you-at-right-now/topics/any-twitter-tweeters-out-there ), a thread for Bizniks to post their Twitter handles.

Here's an easier way to do it:

    http://tweepml.org/follow/?q=seattle

It's a free tool that lets you quickly follow everyone within a defined group. You can request to be added to another group, create your own, or just use it to follow with one click a large number of Twitter users.

  • Writer's discussion: Novelizing a Screenplay/ screenwriting from a novel

In 2002 I authored a screenplay, which got a minor award at the SIFF. I have decided to make it into a bestselling novel first before trying to sell the screenplay. With all the irons I have in the fire, it seems wiser to collaborate with a co-author to create the novel. Better to give 60% of the profits than delay.

Anyone done this kind of work before- specifically co-authoring one fiction form into another?

I'm not, at this time, thinking of a ghost writer per se, as I'd want to share credit and split profits in their favor.

  • How many of you have used a "white paper" for promotion?

I'm working on a white paper for a presentation to Boeing (anyone have a contact at the Museum of Flight?) and was wondering if other Bizniks are employing this tool?

There are a lot of professional writers in this community, and I'm sure this is one of their offerings...

These seem to be catching a lot more mindspace lately... or is just that I'm paying more attention now?

And if you use recycled stationery, is it called a "grey paper"?

  • A new pretender to the throne

I saw a PPC ad for "BNI - www.synergybiznet.com?BNI - SynergyBizNet is an online business network Complimenting BNI"

As most of you know Biznik ranks within the top 2 results on Google for "business networking." BNI vacillates with it. Considering the age of the respective organizations and the fact that Biznik is more locally based with a smaller staffing and capitalization, it is rather significant to have that kind of page rank...

So I imagine this synergybiznet came along and pitched to BNI leadership hoping to supplant Biznik... but let's face it. The rate of growth is not simply the online presence, it's the philosophy.

  • Are you a Magical Dad?

I'm going to be launching a site very soon aggregating videos for dads to learn fun ideas, such as jokes, magic, pranks, science tricks, stunts, etc., to amuse and entertain their kids... ways to turn moments into memories.

I plan on doing a widespread call for videos, so that any dad with a good idea can share it and learn other ideas from their fellow dads. Another incentive will be a contest with a trip to either Universal Studios in Florida, or Hogwart's in England (whichever has the better deal).

For any dad on here that has a video clip of them getting the kids to crack up, whether it be clowning around or creating a moment of astonishment, please contact me. You get a jump on the competition by having your video up at the outset.

One major guideline: looking for something others could emulate and learn from. In other words, not a blooper reel from your home movies, but something anyone could use to spread the joy.

    Thanks!

  • Magic training for Biznik? Opinions, please.

Well, it's happened again. I was at a Biznik event, performed some moments of astonishment, and was asked if I could help them make a problem in their business disappear. And he was serious: he would like to get a prospective client's attention, by making an outdated proposal "go up in smoke" to dramatically make them to FORGET IT.

So. What would you, the Biznik community, think of an event where we explore some transformation mechanisms... attention keeping, emotion connecting, fun moments of surprise that help you... ...get an appointment, ...demonstrate an idea, ...inspire new thoughts, ...motivate some business.

I would draw from feedback the topics and effects to be performed and taught. And would a $15 fee be acceptable for this? If there is enough buzz, I'll schedule an event. Suggestions for a venue and a date would be welcome.

  • Anyone know the King county vendor process?

Wondering if anyone in the Biznik community has worked with a municipal government, esp. the County, and what was the process for consideration? Is it on an RFP basis only, or is there a specific buyer?

  • Biznik and sex

I was wondering what the stats for Biznik show in regards to gender distribution. If you look at the first few pages of supporting members, it's a fairly even balance.

I've also noticed that there are many couple who joined as a team... makes sense since the whole thing was started by a couple!

Anybody else ever ponder the rather deep thought that one day, our children's children will be joining Biznik, and all of our profiles will still be on here (without updated photos of course)?

    Brian

    PS: made you look.

  • Polls?

I think the Biznik community could get some use out of polls. That is, member ability to post a poll... If I could post one it would be: Should the voting on Learn section articles be anonymous or not?

Since this is the forum place to build a community, I wanted to make sure anyone in the specific field of event-planning, tradeshow marketing, expo organizing, conference coordinating, etc. knew about the upcoming Biznik networking event at the Columbia Tower Club.

We'll be in the sunset-oriented Stratus Lounge. Hope you can make it! http://biznik.com/events/2008/7/22/tradeshow-pros-gettogether

    My favorite line:

"Your parents don't mind! They're thrilled to have you back home! Even from way up here on the podium, I can hear their teeth grinding with joy."

  • Definition of event parameters?

This is to ask the community at large about their opinion on the definition of a Biznik event.

Can an event be properly considered an event if it is a one-one-one consultation? That is, if the RSVP limit is 1, should that count as anything other than a meeting?

It seems self-evident that this would open the events page to a plethora of such one-to-one consultations, which would dilute the value of the community-building purpose of events. Many Bizniks have had offers on the promotions page for "initial consultations," and so it was a surprise today to see a 1-person event approved: http://biznik.com/events/2008/6/1/complimentary-coaching-session

I intended no rancor in my comment on the event (or this post). It just seems self-evident that a 2-person meeting is not really an "event," whether for free or for fee. What says the community?

  • In DC next 6 days, anybody need anything while I'm out?

I'll be in DC and Arlington, Va starting Friday the 23rd.

Just in case there's a Seattle-area Biznik who wishes they had a contact out there, let me know. My sister is in Biznik (trying to get her more involved), her husband is a speechwriter for a senator. I am hosting a Biznik happy hour networking event while there a few blocks from my sister's place.

I'm not sure how much I could do for you, but who knows? Just communicate it and I'm sure we could figure something out. Never hurts to ask.

  • Watchdog resource for SEO consumers

Fledgling site could be useful for helping clean up the industry:

    seoripoff.com

Looks like that forum hasn't gotten much use yet, but it won't be long... stories like this abound:

SEATTLE — The state attorney general said yesterday Redmond-based Internet Advancement must pay penalties for failing to get its customers top placement on major search engines. Internet Advancement, which also goes by 4GreatBuys.com, must refund customers, pay $24,432 to the state for costs incurred and a civil penalty of $25,000.

The company had promised to get its customers ranked in the top 10 to 20 results on the search engines... The case involved "search engine optimization" services, which attempt to get businesses high placement in search-engine results. She said the Attorney General's Office, the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau received more than 100 complaints from customers around the country.

  • Two events at once?

I've noticed that it is possible to RSVP for simultaneous events. I don't know if that is intended to allow for the possibility of attending both, but if both start at the same time, and one is a workshop or class, then it seems that a member shouldn't be able to double-book him or herself. It is possible that the member just forgot he'd already RSVPed elsewhere.

Would it make sense to add a feature that prompts the user "You have already RSVPed for another event at the same time! Are you sure you want to sign up for this event as well?" I am sure someone can intend to swing by two different open social events, although I don't think it's the best way to go about it.

Microsoft has been pushing Yahoo for a buyout. I wonder what the name of the merged company would be: Microhoo? Or just a soft, micro-version of the exclamation "Yahoo!" such as "Neato."
