Angie,

Elizabeth: We'll definitely keep that date in mind. Hope you have a good trip!
I'm a long time Mac user. When I started up my business I did a lot of research into accounting packages.
I heard a lot of stories about both QuickBooks and MYOB. I wasn't really excited by either of them, and I was about to pick one, when another choice crossed my path: MoneyWorks.
It's from a little company in New Zealand called Cognito. It doesn't have the name recognition that the other two have, but I have to say it's a great product. I've been using it for a year and a half. It plays very nicely on the Mac. (They make a Windows version also.) And the support that the company provides is top notch.
It does everything I need. I can't speak for your particular circumstances though, so you might want to check it out yourself. You can download a free demo version.
Thanks everyone for coming. And thank you to Deborah and David for helping me get things going.
I had a great time. It's a really good group of people. I'm excited for our next meeting where we'll hopefully get to meet many of you who couldn't make it last night.
Oh, and stay tuned for David's pictures!
Well tomorrow's the day. Thanks everyone for your interest. For those of you who will be there, see you tomorrow! For those of you who won't, please keep in touch. This should be the first of many.
Til then...
Well tomorrow's the day for the event. Thanks everyone for their interest and encouragement. For those of you who will be there, see you tomorrow! For those who won't, there will be pictures. :)

So... the event I've been working on has been officially posted. May 12th, 7pm @ Think Coffee. For all the details, check it out here:

Glad to see there is a lot of interest here in NYC. Just so you know, I've been talking with some other NYC Bizniks, and we're putting together an event. We've got a place picked out and have narrowed down the dates. I'm working with the venue to find one that works, which should be in the early half of May. I'll be sure to let everyone know when it's settled, which should be soon.
Just wanted to give everyone an update. We've got a place picked out and have narrowed down the dates. I'm working with the venue to find one that works. I'll be sure to let everyone know when it's settled. Thanks for your patience. It's coming soon.

Scott,
Thanks for the encouragement. I agree with you completely. We're aiming to have an event around the end of the month. I hope to be posting details shortly.
Welcome to Biznik! It's good to see other computer guys around.
Trisha,
My comment about consolidation was really in regards to the fact that there are two separate posts about basically the same topic. I thought it would make sense to put all the comments into one post, rather than spread them over two. That way we can more easily keep track of them.
That being said, maybe we should actually have separate events for NYC and Long Island. I think it's great if everyone wants to come to one, and the one I'm working on will be open to anyone. (I hope to have something decided in the next couple days.) But if Long Islanders won't want to make the trip in, I don't know that NYC'ers will want to make the trip out.
A quick search of the members shows hundreds of members within a reasonable distance. I think there is enough interest and energy for both. Perhaps you want to take on organizing one for Long Island?
Trisha, thanks for the offer. If there's a lot of interest for an event on Long Island, then perhaps your cafe is the way to go.
There also seems to be some interest in an event in the city. I've been working on trying to get something together.
There's another post on the forums about this topic located at: http://biznik.com/forums/biznik-community-builders-forum/topics/nyc-where-are-you
For simplicity's sake, it's probably better if we consolidate into one post. That one seems like it has more traffic, so perhaps we can all comment there. I'll collect the comments, and we'll take it from there.
I've been working on trying to get something together, but have unfortunately been busy with, you know, running a business and all that. :)
I was thinking of having something towards the end of the month, either on a weeknight evening or weekend afternoon. My first thought was for a coffee shop, something like Think Coffee.
I'd love to hear suggestions that other people have for time and place. Once we've gotten a lot of input, then I think we just pick something and go for it.
While they're not what first comes to mind when most people think green, our computer products are eco friendly. This includes solar and wind powered chargers for your gadgets, energy efficient computer power supplies, laptop bags whose fabric is made from recycled plastic, and many more.
I'd be happy to be involved if I can.
Good article. I think you hit the nail on the head on many points. I particularly found #2 useful. It's good to remember that it's not about you, it's about helping out your customers. I also agree that fear can be a big factor in all of this.
The one point I disagree on a little bit is #5. As a one man shop who also has other business responsibilities, there are days where I really don't have the time to do everything I need to do.
I agree with you 100% that marketing is important and you have to make time for it. But I think it's also important to acknowledge that sometimes there are real time constraints that must be dealt with.
Not exactly bugs, but two minor things worth mentioning:
Under "Who's viewing your profile", since I'm not a paying member it says:
"2 logged in members and 4 non-logged in members viewed your profile in the last week. Upgrade now to find our who!" ---> I think you mean "find OUT who".
And Under "Your recent activity" on my profile, it says:
"You updated the needs section of their profile 3 hours ago" --> I think that should say "of YOUR profile".
You might want to check out Constant Contact.
Good article. It gives me some interesting ideas about how I might expand my own business.
Thanks for all the replies.
Howard, you're right. It might as well be me.
So, Deborah, yes, let's talk about getting something together. I'll send you a message so we can discuss further.
Elizabeth, I'll get in touch with your brother as well, and see if he's interested.
Who knows, this could be the start of something...
