The vast majority of these storage vessels are buried in the ground - outside in the garden somewhere. These tanks are made of single walled steel and are quite vulnerable to various natural factors that cause the tank to eventually degrade. Tanks develop perforations that no longer keep the oil in the tank, and allow water and soil in. The environmental impact from tanks leaking can vary from a small concern to a serious threat. In some situations there can be a simple onsite fix involving just the homeowner and myself to an extended clean up project involving government agencies and insurance compnaies.
