  • Sierra,

You know it's ironic. There is so much I want to say about this but WONT because I feel very much like you when it comes to many things I actually think. :) No really, that's only part way true...

I think everyone has a certain chicken out threshold, and what's doubly ironic is that the community (that is, you and me) largely create the boundaries around what's ok behaviour with our silence. One thing I love about Biznik is it's unique place as a nexus and facilitator of, what has been to me, a very meaningful, sustainable, and real life face-to-face social network.

I think we, as a society, have all become so chicken-ified/chicken-fried :) by not having enough opportunity to inter-relate to one another, and thereby are never able to gather enough of an experiential basis to get comfortable with our place in the ever moving target that defines "socially acceptable".

whooooa, didn't mean to get so "heavy" man :) Oh, well.

  • My current book favorites are:

    • the MetaPhysical Club - A story of ideas in America

    and

    • Fats that Heal and Fats that Kill by Udo Erasmus

The fats that heal book is a little old for it's content, but timeless in it's own way.

  • Puzzle this one...

I don't care for chocolate at all usually but find myself seriously craving the following form of chocolate:

    http://www.udoerasmus.com/products/bijabars_en.htm

Perhaps it's the quality of Omega 3/6/9 based fats that makes all the difference!

Udo Erasmus has really made such amazing contribution to the maze of modern day nutritional info!

  • Here here WilliamLeif!

I didn't appreciate how much of an emotional impediment the commuting issue was to me until I saw you and Leif talk about it. I would be a lot more likely to join in on this if there were a carpool.

Another impediment for me was that the end goal was not very well defined. This is still true, but the social aspects of being able to carpool make me a lot less likely to mind that.

  • I might have posted this one before, but it's such a critical one that I want to be sure:

You cannot see you cursor when composing an email message to someone through the web interface.

  • I've met the folks at Greendrinks seattle, but don't know them well. They will be hosting another greendrinks event on August 14th, downtown. see: seattlegreendrinks.org.

Speaking of non-profits, I am also an admirer of freindsofseattle.org. They seem like a real get-it-done sort of group.

  • Me. Debian is my flavor of choice for now. I much prefer the KDE desktop over Gnome for any number of reasons, and I originally did used Gnome. I do Network Engineering. I like *nix in general because it tends to be more agile and accomodating than windows for a lot of the stuff I do.

  • One thing that I think would be worthwhile is perhaps for Biznik members to to recognized for carpooling together to events where/when possible. Any thoughts?

  • Hmmm.

    Some more thoughts about this.

It almost seems like we have two conversations going at once here:

One conversation is about what it means to be sustainable within the overall US marketplace framework. And the other, a kind of sustainability that can function in a way that is less dependent on the current economic frame work. I can see merits and reasons for either approach, dependent on the circumstance, but my feeling is that they are (more of less) fundamentally different in terms of their underlying strategy, motivation, and approach.

I love that we are having this conversation and would love to see an event to discuss this more.

  • I like the way you're thinking Bryce. I agree. Sustainability tends to mean a high degree of interdependency and complexity and tends to lend itself no not being terribly flashy by it's very nature.

That said, I think there are big and small ways that organizations and people can contribute to sustainability as we re-educate each other about what this word really means.

  • Hey Joe,

I think that's a fine idea. I'm here in Seattle. I was recently in Belfast (a couple of months ago) for some work. Sheesh it was cold!

    Hi Kenneth,

    How's Tallahassee?

We can try a skype conference at some point, for the sake of experiment and fun, if you all have a place with a good broadband connection.

  • Not sure about a competitive service just yet. Usually the way it works is, Google offers it first, and better than everyone else, then others follow, because Google demonstrates to the market that it's profitable. Gotta love those guys....
