Great feedback everyone.
Owen, I whole heartily agree that video is about more than just explaining this. Video is an amazing way to convey emotion, simplify complex topics, and fundamentally scale human communication. I'm all for video, obviously!
My point is that it can be really overwhelming and hard to decide when to make a video. If you can rule out some the areas that don't benefit as much from video it becomes easier to decide when to make a video.
David, I agree that a great solution is to make more videos that are between 30-90 seconds. We see lots of people making videos of that length with success at Wistia!

Ksenia,
Your take on video marketing matches my own experience exactly. We found that by adding video throughout our site there were a couple of major benefits.
- Time on site increased
- Visitors that watched videos were 3-4x more likely to convert into a trial or contact form
- Our sales cycles (we use a b2b model) were shorter as prospects were better informed when we started talking with them
But I think the piece you've missed is how do you measure all this. What's the ROI?
We solved this problem by tracking the engagement of every visitor on every video. We can associate sales to particular videos, or particular parts of a video. This makes the ROI pretty clear. It also helps us figure out what kinds of video to make next.
Just my two cents. ;)
