  • It's a relief to see all the people who hate cold calling come out of the woodwork, and a joy to hear one sing its praises in such a unique and compelling way.

I'm not surprised you do well on the phone, Mark; you have a very distinctive voice!

Speaking of which, Ilise and I have many discussions about rocks and hills. I generally employ more, er, colorful adjectives, but boy, does that metaphor of work ever work for me!

  • This is exactly the kind of article we need up on Biznik—stuff that is useful in our regular bidness lives, but also specifically helpful to the Biznik community.

Kudos to you for writing something so forthright and helpful.

The one tip I'll add is to have redundant backup plans, especially if you have an electronic presentation, and to be (almost) annoyingly nitpicky when preflighting technical specs. Dan and I had a hilarious misconnect over software versions that ended up with me doing entire "PPT" on a whiteboard. All's well that end's well but oy, I'd rather not repeat that one.

  • I have to say, that was a dandy group who turned out tonight. Quite diverse, lively, smart and of course, friendly.

And, oh!, how my sales vocabulary expanded.

Thanks, for the social proof, Rick. :-)

  • Hey, everyone—looking forward to seeing you in a few hours.

Don't forget to bring small bills, in case we have to double up on checks. Wanna keep things as easy as possible for Jerry's!

  • I love it when great writers tackle what can be loathsome and prickly subjects.

This is a great round up of the key reasons to network, with great tips on how to do it right tucked in there. Extremely hard to do well, and you hit it out of the park, girl.

  • Haha. This is one weird February—I've met two St. Nicks in the same month!

  • Hey, Brian. Why don't you host your own event in the Valley or Hollywood? (HINT, HINT!)

Seriously, the idea here is not to have just one thing, way over on the Westside; it's to kickstart L.A., period. I'd love to see Biznik events all over the metro area, and in Hollywood? Or even North Hollywood?

Well, that's way closer to my place, so I'm totally game! Go for it, dude!

  • Hey, Carolyn! Glad you're coming out. Will you be bicycling there? :-)

Seriously, that's a great idea, to come with an intention held loosely. I've just been thinking about gathering people; wonder what else I can come up with between now and then?

  • Heather, Alaia, Linda - Thanks again for coming out. I know it's always a bit of a hassle to get in your car and go somewhere, but I'm really pleased with the way this first event went. Looking forward to the next one, and hope you are, too!

Rick - Hey, it happens. The idea is for these to become an ongoing thing, and also (LOOK, MA--FULL TRANSPARENCY!) to encourage other people to start setting up their own events. Pop over to the Seattle network for a taste of how it can work. They've got events going every day of the week--multiple events, with all kinds of focuses or lack thereof!

I'm guessing it'll be pretty hard to recap specifically what people took away, since there were so many conversations going over the course of the evening. But if anyone writes about it on a blog or something, please post back here on the thread to let us know!

  • Thanks, you guys! I had a fantastic time, too. Really, really interesting people and yes, some pretty fascinating, definitely non-networky conversation. Can't wait until the next one!

  • Right on, Justin. Glad there will be someone else there who has witnessed the magic in person. (Although I believe we have another former Seattleite coming, as well.)

  • Hey, Elizabeth!

By all means, start up some stuff in the Inland Empire. Seattle has tons of stuff but there are also adjacent communities that host their own events and cultivate their own community. And really, I'm guessing that if you build it, they will come.

And of course, you're always welcome out L.A. way.

Let us know if you have any questions we can help you with.

  • My pleasure. You and Alaia (hi, Alaia!) have been so great about helping me get this L.A. Biznik thing going. I'm looking forward to hearing your interview with Dan. He's fun, and so smart!

  • Stories are in the air today. I saw two more stories about telling your story this morning, going through my RSS feed.

To ease the minds of people giving this a shot for the first time, also please give yourself permission to write what brilliant writer Anne Lamott calls the "shtty first draft." It's easy to fool yourself into thinking it's easy, reading good writers like Caroline writing even rough* drafts.

And in addition to a great tip, Caroline, might I say that's one helluva great story.

  • Also an anti-apps person. Although there's one person I will poke back. Don't know why; just get a charge out of it.

Thanks for a great starter reference kit, Donna. I'm passing it along to a few people who've been pestering me for insight into the effective use of FB; this is one of those "101" articles it's always handy to have a link to.

@Kate, I think you're smart to keep your Twitter and FB unbuckled if you want to use Twitter for your coaching biz. There aren't any hard and fast rules with this stuff, except for one: do your damnedest to be useful and excellent, not annoying.

It sounds like you using universal pinging agents would move you from the former category to the latter. You can still be transparent--you're not trying to hide your business side. You're just not foisting it on people.

  • Every single point--save the thing about freebies--is one I make in my own workshops/etc about using social networking effectively.

Which makes me even more excited about the freebie stuff: what better than to have a new idea from someone I already agree with on everything else?

  • Kelly! Sorry I missed you at this one. Once again, a great time meeting Seattle folk. And, hey--actually catching up with some! It's like being bicoastal, only on the same coast.
