  • Event topic suggestions

Chris Haddad and I are getting together to brainstorm some events that will be held over the next couple of months, and in preparation for that I'd like to hear from you about what you'd like to see in the way of educational events. What topics interest you? How-to classes such as "How to run an effective email newsletter?" My feeling is we need more classes with a specific business focus like this. What sort of event titles would you like to see?

  • Great event venue: Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford

I have a client in the Good Shepherd Center, a huge old historic building in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood, that I meet with regularly, and each time I walk in and out of that incredible place, I think, wow, wouldn't it be cool if we could rent space here for a Biznik event. Well, it turns out you can! Not only that, but it's about as cheap as any space I've seen - a room that holds 20-25, with big huge windows and a table with blackboards on the walls goes for $10-$15 hr, depending on when you rent it. There's also a larger room available, which holds 50-60, for $20-$25 hr.

You can call (206) 547-8127 for recorded information and application forms - I have the forms too, if you want them, I can fax 'em to you - just drop me an email to dan [at] biznik.com.

  • Learn how to create a small business web presence tonight

Particularly if you're artist, or someone with a portfolio of pictures you'd like to put online that you can update easily, check out my class tonight at the Apple Store in U Village. I'll be focusing on how to use iWeb, which is a nifty little tool that allows you to build incredibly beautiful websites, incredibly fast. I'm going to build an artist portfolio site for Morgan Hammer in under an hour, and I'll also answer any questions you may have on the subject of building a small business web presence. RSVP here. Hope to see you tonight!

  • Great turnout at Mona's last night

Thanks to everone who showed up at Mona's in Greenlake last night, we had a fabulous happy hour at a beautiful place. In particular I'd like to say thanks to co-owner Quinn, who gave us happy hour prices all night.

I recorded 31 names, and I'm pretty sure there were a few that I didn't catch, so if you attended but didn't sign in, please drop me an email so I can credit you with attending.

Last night reminded me how glad I am that we've got this way of finding each other. Biznik really is starting to work the way we imagined. Thanks for being part of it.

  • San Francisco happy hour on April 27th

Biznik member David Amann will be hosting the first Biznik event outside of Seattle on April 27th - a happy hour in San Francisco.

If you know someone who would be a great Biznik member in the Bay Area, please let them know about this event.

  • Happy Hour at Mona's is Tuesday night

Hey there Seattle Bizniks, don't forget that tomorrow night is Biznik happy hour at Mona's, which is in Greenlake. This will likely be our largest event ever, and Mona's is making us feel welcome by offering Biznik members happy hour prices all evening.

I'm looking forward to meeting some new members, and I hope you can make it.

  • Web class at Apple Store in U Village

Biznik member Nick Schulman, who is a business consultant at the Apple Store in University Village, has asked me to teach a class on how to create a small business web presence at the store in U Village on May 10th. It's part of an all-day Business Summit that Apple is doing. My class will happen at 7pm.

During the hour-long presentation, I'm going to build (from start to finish) an artist portfolio website for Morgan Hammer, a Biznik member who is a sculptor. My tool of choice? iWeb, a new application from Apple that makes sites like this a snap to both build and maintain.

This will be an RSVP-only event, and I'll publish the url to Apple's rsvp form once it's available.

  • Attendance at last night's event

I recorded 38 members as attending last night. If you attended last night and didn't sign the signup sheet, drop me a line so you can get credit for attending.

  • Small Power Point job

I've got a client who has a small Power Point job and no one in my usual referral network wants to touch anything this small. It's just a couple hours of work, so I can understand, but is there anybody out there who is interested in this kind of job ?

  • Bug fixes

So, dB joins Biznik today, and instantly finds three bugs. How embarrassing. I've fixed them, and also a fourth, an encoding problem that was causing quotation marks and apostrophes to show up as boxes when M$ Word text was pasted into Biz Talk.

Thanks dB. BTW, I hear the McDonald's in New York are fabulous...

  • Biznik is running veeeeerrrrrrrrryyyyy slllllloooowww

It's because of a routing problem at the colocation facility - they're working on it, and hopefully we'll get our speed back soon. Hang in there.

  • Top 10 Marketing Mistakes class response

I'd like to start a thread for people who attended the Top 10 Marketing Mistakes class last night, led by Dominic Canterbury and Chris Haddad. Any thoughts or feedback for them, please post it here. I'll start it off with:

That's a class I would have paid money to see. I wish I'd had the foresight to record it and then I could have posted a podcast so the rest of our members could check it out as well. I'm going to blog about it today in the Biznik Blog, but the quick take is: these two guys have a future in teaching marketing workshops, if they ever want it. Great job.

  • Event suggestions

I've got a couple of suggestions for events that I'd like to schedule in the next couple of months that I'd like to float. Both of these would be informal meetings in a casual setting, no more than 12 members.

    1. Dealing with clients - how do you deal with clients who are always late with payment? What kind of creative things can you do to stay in touch with clients and get them talking about you?

    2. Beyond Success - if you succeed in business and achieve your goals, will it lead to what you really want? Will business success bring you happiness? Peace? How can we balance personal achievement with our need for connection and spiritual growth?

Let me know if any of these grab you. A great venue for these would be the couches at the BalMar or Liberty, once it's open. Anyone else have meeting ideas and/or venue suggestions?

  • If you're going to the Biznik happy hour on Wednesday, Feb. 15...

It's going to be at BalMar, which is in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. It's a big place, so FYI we'll be gathering upstairs, in the back room area where there are a bunch of low couches. Oh yes, and please open a tab for yourself at the bar so we don't have to deal with any end-of-the-evening tab payment drama.

  • When we get enough discussion going, I'll add sorting by category

But until we get a bunch of posts happening, I'll leave it like this, so you can see at at glance what's new. The default sort is to show the most recent post at the top.

  • Posting or replying both count toward activity points

When you view your Biznik profile, displayed under your photo is a "last activity" date and time. And I thought I'd let you know that posting to Biz Talk and also replying to a post both count as activities.

  • Category suggestions?

I've launched with just a few categories - let me know what categories you'd like to see, and I'll add them.

  • I'll be adding RSS feeds for the discussions very soon

That will make it really slick, because you'll be able to follow discussions without cluttering up your email in-box.

  • How do you like the new discussion tools?

How does everyone like the new discussion features? Sure beats getting spammed all the time on the discussion list, hey?
