  • I offer marketing services to small businesses, and I see a lot of businesses who aren't doing many of the things you list. The biggest problem I'm finding, particularly in our current economy, is not starting with enough cash. Your article explains it very succinctly. I'm going to link to it on my blog. Thanks so much for the great advice.

  • I recently attended the national SPJ journalism conference in Atlanta and everyone was talking about Twitter. In fact, one reporter posted "Tweets" during a trial to keep folks updated on what was happening. I was curious then, but hadn't made time to investigate what it was all about, so I really appreciate the summary, Christina. This is immensely helpful!

  • YourMailingListProvider.com: This service doesn't provide templates like Constant Contact does but you can create your own and add it to the WYSIWYG editor for each e-mail. The price per month depends on how many e-mails you send and the features you want for the service. Prices begin at $3.75 - $5.00/month. I've used them for several accounts and I love them!

  • Jennifer, this is a great list and so nice to have them in one place. I have to admit I'm not up on the all of the new social media trends, so I like your "bite-size" approach. Thank you!

  • Another option is some targeted marketing and PR. For example, distributing a newsworthy press release to local media as well as to some of the (free and paid) online distribution sites. If interested, contact me. I'd be happy to help.

  • Wow - tip #5 is an eye opener! As a freelance writer, I am an avid reader and I subscribe to most of the Seattle area magazines. Sadly, they are piling up in the corner of my office, living room, bedroom...you get the idea. In the past, I have always approached it that I would have to sit down and read the whole thing or it would have to wait. While that isn't particularly logical, I am intrigued by your idea. Now I'm thinking, duh... Thank you for the brilliant idea. I love it!

  • Great article!

As a marketing professional, my niche is working with small business owners and nonprofits...folks who can't always afford a full-on marketing campaign with all the bells and whistles. Your affordable tips are great - I use some of them myself - but you've added a few I haven't tried.

    Thanks so much!
