Affiliate programs

I'm creating an affiliate model for Eyejot (http://www.eyejot.com) and would like help figuring out what affiliate members might expect from referring people to our service that join up for our "pro" versions.

For instance, we have a $99/year PRO Plus version that lets Eyejot users add their logo and color schemes to some of our pages. If an affiliate's action helped us get a new customer, what's reasonable for us to give back to them?

We're planning on, initially, having a single tier affiliate program. Do we setup a sliding/escalating percentage system that encourages referrals? How often do affiliates expect to be paid?
